Govans Elementary Faces Summer Funding Crisis

Govans Elementary is facing a Summer Program funding crisis.
Last year we received $42,000 from the Baltimore Summer Funding Collaborative to support the summer program.

This year we received $0.

The Summer Funding Collaborative received $10.2 million in requests for $2.8 million in available grant funds.

Fortunately,  Loyola Clinical Centers is coming onboard as a new partner this summer, and offsetting some of our costs by providing literacy instruction to our students.

We need to raise at least $15,000 in order to run a free, streamlined program for fifty K-5 students from July 5th-28th, Monday through Thursday, 8:30am-2:15pm. Offerings will include hands-on STEM instruction, literacy instruction, physical education, technology, team building, arts and crafts, breakfast and lunch.

Govans Elementary is a Title I school. If we cannot provide a summer program for our students, parents will be forced to turn to programs which are not tailored to each student's academic needs.. Our students will miss out on the instruction and enrichment they need to prevent summer learning loss.

Thanks to the following generous individuals and organizations, we have raised $5,510 so far:

Wolfe Street Academy Says Thank You to Volunteers and Partners

After School Chess, Robotics and Tae Kwon Doe students say thank you to the Julie Community Center with a little community service in April 2017.
Wolfe Street Academy (WSA) and the Baltimore Curriculum Project would like to recognize all of the regular volunteers who help make WSA great. Volunteers work during the school day and after school; provide one-on-one and small group tutoring; run clubs; and help at events. Everything they do helps provide opportunities to students that WSA would otherwise not be able to afford.

Below are a few examples of the opportunities volunteers made possible this school year:

  • 45 students received weekly, and sometimes daily, tutoring support.

  • 134 students participated in at least one extracurricular activity during after school this year including Chess, Tae Kwon Doe, Girls on the Run, Spanish, Sailing, Violin, Viola, Cello, Baseball, Soccer, Theater, Neighborhood Health Advocates, Robotics, Physics, and a Cooking club.

  • All kindergarten and first grade after school students learned about oral hygeine through the free, seven-week "Healthy Smiles for Baltimore Kids" program provided by the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.

John McGill Presents at Strong City Neighborhood Institute
By Jon McGill, Director of Academic Affairs, Baltimore Curriculum Project

On April 29th, Strong City Baltimore brought together over 400 community residents, neighborhood leaders, and community development professionals at the Baltimore Design School for their 2017 Neighborhood Institute.

Workshops were provided in several blocks, with sessions promoting and explaining various aspects of community organizing, from teaching people to undertake grant writing to developing their own neighborhood gardens.

BCP's Jon McGill presented a workshop on Poverty and Learning to about 25 attendees in an afternoon session. One result of this presentation was a request from the BSO's OrchKids program to have McGill provide two workshops on this topic to their new teachers cohort in September.

Strong City Baltimore has been an active partner with BCP, particularly in the development of our operation of Govans Elementary School. To learn more about Strong City Baltimore visit:
