Message from the President of the Board

Sound safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practice depends on quality SH&E practitioners. The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) prides itself on providing a tested and true means of synthesizing knowledge and practice through our safety certifications.
BCSP certifications undergo rigorous evaluation, from job task analyses to ensure they meet industry needs, to the updating and revalidation of examination items (questions) so that those provide an objective measure of candidates’ knowledge and skills. BCSP’s ANSI-accredited certifications set the standard for quality because of our research.
Through the BCSP Foundation, we are pursuing the opportunity to further advance SH&E research and understanding. We provided over 37 student scholarships last year and are in the process of providing further funding for grants. This year will also mark our first Global Research and Innovation Summit. To be held in Toronto on October 2-3, 2020, the Summit will present opportunities to effectively translate “what we know” into “what we do” as safety professionals.
This transformation of what we know into what we do is innovation—what I call our “Vision 2020.” Already this year, BCSP implemented changes to our application processes to recognize training and education for our supervisory certifications and eliminate a cost barrier that proved prohibitive for those with non-U.S. degrees. With the further development of BCSP examCORE, we will further multiply our capability to teach aspiring safety professionals the skills they need to be effective in their careers.
BCSP certificants are committed to acting with integrity by the BCSP Code of Ethics, holding paramount the safety and health of people, and the protection of the environment and property. They have the experience necessary to get results and have proven their knowledge through examination.
I encourage you, as one of our credential holders, an aspiring certificant, or someone who values the expertise of those in our profession who hold certification to join BCSP in making our Vision 2020 a reality.

David V. MacCollum Passed Away at 96
|
David V. MacCollum was a pioneer in the safety, health, and environmental field. With a career in safety that spanned 60 years, MacCollum’s accolades were as illustrious as they were substantial.
MacCollum was the third-ever Certified Safety Professional
®
(CSP
®
), received the CSP Award of Excellence and the BCSP Lifetime Achievement Award, served as President of ASSE, was a member of the U.S. Secretary of Labor’s Construction Safety Advisory Committee, was a published author, and was named a Fellow by ASSE in 1999—the organization’s highest honor—among other accomplishments.
As part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s, MacCollum’s work was instrumental in developing roll-over protection structures for tractors and other construction equipment. In an interview with BCSP in 2011, MacCollum said “If we are to be successful, we have to overcome traditional priorities—the conventional wisdoms that came about when little was known of safety, but that people still believe.”

Discussion of Changes to BCSP Policies
|
On February 3, 2020, changes were made to the academic record submission process for non-U.S. degree applicants and to the eligibility requirements for the Safety Trained Supervisor
®
(STS
®
) and Safety Trained Supervisor Construction
®
(STSC
®
) certifications.
Applicants for the Associate Safety Professional
®
(ASP
®
) and Certified Safety Professional
®
(CSP
®
) who hold non-U.S. degrees will now submit their academic records directly to BCSP, where they will continue to be evaluated under the same rigorous standards to determine U.S. equivalency.
The eligibility requirements for the STS and STSC certifications have also changed. Under the new criteria, applicants may now apply for the STS or STSC with an associate degree in occupational safety, risk management, or construction management. Completion of a two-year trade or union training program or apprenticeship is also recognized.

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals' (BCSP) Foundation received many applications for scholarships and, after much consideration, recently provided 37 determined safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) students with $5,000 each to support their continued dedication to the development of their knowledge and the improvement of safety practice.
Every year, the BCSP Foundation offers scholarships to students of Qualified Academic Programs (QAP) holding accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI). A total of $185,000 was disbursed to recipients in the last year.
