Fourth Quarter 2019 e Newsletter
Message from the President of the Board
Linda F. Martin, CSP, SMS, ASP, OHST, CHST, STSC, CIT
BCSP celebrated achievements in safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practice from the first 50 years of our organization’s history this year. As BCSP marked that momentous anniversary, we also envisioned what we can accomplish in the next 50 years. BCSP is building safety’s future.

Through targeted outreach, we are connecting with young people to bridge the gap between student and professional. BCSP’s Youth Outreach Tool Kit is being shared with high school counselors and their students, outlining the opportunities that exist in safety and the paths one may take to become involved. For those aspiring to careers in safety, the BCSP Foundation has expanded the number of ABET-accredited college safety programs to which it provides scholarships—and received over 131 applications this year.

BCSP is adamant that SH&E knowledge be applied in practice. This is evident as the BCSP Foundation works to unite research and application as part of its new Research and Innovation Summits , as well as in the work BCSP does to bring together a diverse set of SH&E subject matter experts for the development and revalidation of our examinations. We are proud to share space with other practitioners and organizations who champion improvement in occupational safety.

Creation of the new BCSP examCORE pre-exam training program was spurred by this commitment to the advancement of the safety profession. This advancement begins with the practitioner, and we are excited to provide BCSP examCORE as a powerful tool for those seeking professional development.

I greatly appreciate having had the opportunity to serve as BCSP Board President this year. My colleagues on the Board of Directors are exceptional advocates for the improvement of SH&E practice, the BCSP staff is truly dedicated to the profession, and our certificant volunteers are valuable, integral partners in creating a safer tomorrow. Thank you all for leading with me.

New Recertification Cycle and Worksheet Due Dates
BCSP has changed the five year recertification cycle to run from July 1 through June 30, rather than from January 1 to December 31.

Recertification worksheets may now be submitted as early as six months before the June 30 cycle end date and must be submitted no later than July 31.

The end of the year is a hectic time for many people. With this change, we hope to both remove any confusion that may occur with the renewal fee due date and alleviate a little stress around such a busy time of the year.

The BCSP Foundation is Investing in Research
The BCSP Foundation seeks to deliver support and funding to those safety professionals and future pioneers of the safety community in addressing and/or solving safety-related concerns or deficits. The only way to continue with this precedent and movement of safety as a global core value is by providing funds and resources behind those who truly want to achieve this mission. These grants are a small part of the total equation but a true catalyst to a much larger movement.

If you are stepping into the unknown on a quest for the larger answer, seeking the essential solution to an age-old issue, in the formative stages of development or creating broader understanding by unraveling assumptions, the Foundation wants to support your work!

At this time, the Foundation, under the leadership of the Trustees, has designated that each qualified candidate will receive a non-renewable award of:

  • Master’s Thesis: up to $5,000.00 (Application deadline: February 7, 2020)
  • Doctoral Dissertation: up to $10,000.00 (Application deadline: February 7, 2020)
  • Early Stage Funding: up to $25,000.00 (Application deadline: March 27, 2020)
