Message from the President of the Board
|
Safety certification is an important element of safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practice. It is both a pathway to professionalism and a motivating factor for staying relevant. Those who hold BCSP certifications have shown their dedication by obtaining the knowledge and skills to achieve and maintain status as certificants.
It was an honor to recognize the achievements of several of these BCSP certificants at our
sixth annual Awards of Excellence (AoE) ceremony, held at ASSE's Safety 2017. These award recipients are leaders in our profession. Brad Giles, CSP, STSC, was the recipient of the 2017 BCSP Lifetime Achievement Award for his dedication to safety and advancing the profession by promoting education, professional development, and certification. Through his leadership, Brad has helped many safety professionals advance their careers.
BCSP and I are similarly proud to support students who show a strong commitment to safety through
our generous scholarships. These students are building the foundation for successful careers in SH&E.
BCSP recently hosted several events at the
new headquarters in Indianapolis. Many long-time certificants met there to receive training to become
BCSP Ambassadors, ready to share information about BCSP certifications. BCSP celebrated the grand opening of the new facility with many local leaders on hand to speak at the event. The Board of Directors also held our spring board meeting in the new building. Many new initiatives were presented and approved. These initiatives will advance our strategic plan, strengthen BCSP, and promote the profession.
I hope you will take a moment to read about these initiatives in this issue of the BCSP
eNewsletter. It is my hope you find something that inspires you to join us in advancing the safety profession.

Upon receiving his award, Giles thanked the many people who supported him throughout his career. "I accept this award for my team members. Any successes I have had is because of our team," he said. "Continue your professional development, for you and your team. Enjoy and take pride in your job. This is a great profession. If you are as lucky as I am, I loved to get up every morning for work. Don't forget: You impact not just your employees, but their extended families, sometimes affecting generations."

New SMS Certification to be Released by July 31, 2017
|
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals' (BCSP) new Safety Management Specialist (SMS) certification had over 1,000 safety professionals sit for its beta exam between March 15 and May 12, 2017, and will be released in final form by
July 31, 2017
.
The SMS is for safety practitioners with the skills, knowledge, and experience required to manage a business's safe operation. The certification is an important component of a comprehensive safety team, fulfilling industry and global demand for validating highly competent safety practitioners with varying amounts of formal education and experience.
Development of the SMS began over one year ago, with a panel of subject matter experts meeting in July 2016 to outline the knowledge and skills their industries require of safety managers and specialists.
"The SMS could not have become the certification it is without the incredible input from our subject matter experts, those who participated in the job task analysis, item writing and passing score panels, and our SMS1 Beta exam participants," said
BCSP Examinations Director,
Susan Gould, CSP, ASP, OHST, CHST, STSC. "We greatly appreciate everyone who joined us in the development phase. Based on feedback from those who applied and sat for the beta exam, the SMS is a highly-reliable, quality certification."
With its release, the SMS will join BCSP's current certifications,
offering a comprehensive set of certifications that both complement one another and recognize safety as a team effort.
The Complete Guide to the SMS, the SMS Exam Blueprint, and the SMS Blueprint References are all available on the BCSP website's SMS page, www.bcsp.org/SMS.

 BCSP Dedicates Indianapolis Headquarters
|
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) dedicated its new, Indianapolis headquarters on April 28, 2017, the International Labour Organization's (ILO) World Day for Safety and Health at Work. The dedication was attended by safety professionals and advocates from Indiana and around the world.
"It was an honor for us, myself and staff, to host the Board, our dedicated certification ambassadors, local officials, and interested certificants," says BCSP's Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Treasa Turnbeaugh, CSP, ASP, CET, CAE, IOM. "Those who spoke at the dedication displayed an enthusiasm for advancing safety practice, and I am thankful to have them as stakeholders in the future of our profession."
Dr. Turnbeaugh opened the building dedication ceremony, and was followed by BCSP Board President, Chris Patton, CSP, ASP. They spoke to the growth of the organization from 20 to 40 people in the last five years, the growing number of BCSP safety certificants, and the outreach done to bring new practitioners into the field.
Vijay Krishna, Senior Director of Credentialing Programs at the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), described BCSP's pioneering role in setting accreditation standards for certification, stating that "BCSP was and is a model organization for accredited personnel certifications."
Rick Ruble, Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Labor, and Timothy Maley, Indiana Deputy Commissioner of Labor, each spoke on the overlap between professional development and improvements in occupational safety. Coming to the building dedication after Indiana's Workers Memorial Day event, there was strong connection made between what has been achieved and what more there is to accomplish.
With a final speech by Angela Smith Jones, Deputy Mayor of Economic Development, who delivered a warm welcome to Indianapolis, the dedication was marked with a ribbon cutting.
BCSP has ensured excellence in safety practice since 1969, does so today, and will well into the future.

 BCSP Ambassador Program Launched
|
To raise awareness about the value of accredited safety certifications, BCSP established the BCSP Ambassador Program-an outreach initiative that engages select volunteers among BCSP certification holders to represent BCSP at events and speaking engagements with stakeholders in the safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) field.
The program was launched before the grand opening of BCSP's new headquarters building in Indianapolis in April. Ambassadors met with BCSP staff for a day of information sharing and knowledge-building exercises.
If you would like to request an ambassador present at your event, whether it be a conference, college career fair, or other function where professional safety career development will be discussed,
contact the BCSP Ambassador Program.

BCSP to Support GSP QAPs' Attaining ABET, AABI Accreditation
|
Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) Qualified Academic Programs (QAP) will soon be given the opportunity to receive funding of up to $10,000 toward accreditation, or re-accreditation, under the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI).
BCSP is currently establishing the processes required to give back to GSP QAPs and further accreditation through this gift program.
"Accreditation is an important indicator of quality" says Dr. Treasa Turnbeaugh, CSP, ASP, CET, CAE, CEO of BCSP. "ABET and AABI are the top accrediting bodies in the engineering and aviation fields, and many GSP QAPs are accredited by these organizations. We believe that more QAPs could hold accreditation and are committed to support them in attaining it as part of our mission."
Current QAP coordinators can expect to receive more information on the BCSP ABET and AABI Gift Program this summer.
As the program grows, BCSP will set up a foundation to further contribute to the development of SH&E education.

Greater Access to BCSP Certification Internationally
|
BCSP has updated international safety practitioners' pathways to certification, with expanded access in India and additional information on meeting certifications' education requirements.
When applying for the CSP or ASP with a degree from a college outside the United States, that degree must be evaluated for US equivalency by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES®). To support applicants who hold international degrees in meeting the ASP or CSPs education requirements, BCSP has gathered relevant information on a new
Application with an International Degree webpage.

New OHST and STS Examinations to Go into Effect
|
The Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) and Safety Trained Supervisor (STS) certifications' exams will be updated in the upcoming month.
The OHST5 examination will go into effect on
August 1, 2017, with the STS3 following it with an
August 15, 2017, release date.
Following a new procedure for changing an exam from a previous form over to a new form, the current exam for each certification will be sold until the new exam's release date. On the new exam form's release date, any candidate who purchased the old exam form will have two (2) months to sit for that form of the exam or they will be automatically switched to the new exam form.

BCSP's Toolkit for Advancing the Safety Profession
|
Banner displays are a great way to promote BCSP certifications and earn Recertification credit. A display is available to any certificate holder for use at chapter meetings, regional or local conferences, career fairs, and other safety-related seminars, meetings, and presentations. BCSP ships to and from any U.S. venue and provides literature at no cost.
If you would like to reserve a display, fill out a Banner Display Request. Displays are first come, first serve, and must be returned.
Presentations on safety certification can also be done for Recertification points, and BCSP has many resources that can be used for presentations, including pre-made PowerPoints, on our Articles and Presentations webpage.

Unauthorized Use of Our Credentials
|
BCSP pursues cases of individuals claiming to hold our credentials without permission. We pursue those cases in which there is clear evidence of the unauthorized use and the individual has a clear responsibility, control, or knowledge of the use. Evidence may be a business card, resume, letter, website, or other publication. If there is no clear evidence, BCSP cannot act on the case.
