Second Quarter 2019 e Newsletter
Message from the President of the Board
Linda F. Martin, CSP, SMS, ASP, OHST, CHST, STSC, CET
The founding of the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) 50 years ago made a bold statement. It declared that successfully ensuring occupational safety requires specialized knowledge and skills; that safety is a profession and requires professionals.

To borrow a few words from one of this year’s BCSP award recipients, Stewart Burkhammer, CSP: “The voice of one person has a much greater impact when it is the voice of a group." It was a pleasure to meet these leaders at our annual awards luncheon because they exemplify the type of leadership that uplifts people and improves the profession; and who are the inspiration for BCSP’s dedication to the advancement of the safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) profession.

Through the opportunities provided by our partners, BCSP has provided 10 SH&E students with scholarships so that they can continue their commitment to the study of safety. The BCSP Foundation, which provided 38 students similar scholarships in 2018, will soon be offering its 2019 scholarships as well.

Opportunities to learn and develop one’s professional abilities are important for everyone and BCSP will be releasing two more programs that will foster such growth soon:

  • The KSA Quest (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities) program will provide certificants a new method of gaining recertification points and recognition of their specialties through online knowledge assessments.

  • The new ExamCORE program will teach safety practitioners the fundamentals necessary to achieve certification while including new content for seasoned practitioners.

Finally, transforming knowledge and ideas into practical application, the BCSP Foundation will be hosting a Biennial Research and Innovation Summit in Indianapolis this August 6 and 7, 2019.

You can read more about these initiatives in this BCSP eNewsletter.

As we approach July 23, the date of BCSP’s founding 50 years ago, we celebrate our history with exciting new firsts such as these.

SMS Shares His Personal Journey to Becoming Safety Professional
For many safety professionals, choosing safety as their career is a path they may not have always envisioned. Maybe it was something they found while in school or a career move presented to them after they entered the workforce. For others though, safety finds them, and sometimes safety seeks them out through unfortunate means. For Joe Atkinson, SMS, currently in his 15 th year of SH&E service, it was a workplace injury his mother sustained while he was a child that would set him on the path to becoming a safety professional.
