Second Quarter 2020 e Newsletter
Message from the President of the Board
Mario A. Varela, CSP, ASP
The experience of practicing safety during a global pandemic has emphasized how each part of our environment is interconnected. In these last few months, preventative safety measures have been top-of-mind for many people for whom safety is not usually part of their everyday focus. Our coworkers, colleagues, and community are eager for safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) professionals to include them as part of the team.

To better ensure a safe return to work, BCSP has joined the National Safety Council (NSC) task force to support the SAFER: Safe Actions for Employee Returns initiative. The SAFER task force is recommending best practices and proven strategies for safety as many workplaces reopen.

Always growing our collaborative efforts for the advancement of safety, we are excited to welcome the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) as our newest partner. It was an honor to formalize this partnership with NAWIC President Diane Mike, CBT, which enhances both our organizations’ capabilities to protect workers.

Working together, we multiply our capacity to create change. BCSP certifications were recently recognized by the Army Credentialing Assistance Program (ACAP), a result of our commitment to offering US military service members professional development assistance. Six students gained scholarships from the AGC Foundation, AIHF, and ASSP Foundation through BCSP sponsorship, joining over 30 others who received scholarships directly from the BCSP Foundation this year.

We will get through these challenging times the same way we achieve success every day: together. If you are not yet certified, now is the time to highlight your expertise. BCSP’s examCORE pre-exam training may be the activity that keeps you engaged in your practice. If you are certified and are one of the many for whom COVID-19 resulted in a change in plans for recertification, you may be interested in BCSP recertPRO. Let BCSP be your partner too.

In the face of our new challenges, I welcome you to join us in advancing SH&E.

NASA's QEP (STEP Program) Ensures Safe Practices In All NASA Activites
Safety as an idea is something to which everyone can relate. We are all taught as children to look both ways before crossing the street. Safety is innate, as we are born capable of understanding that some things are dangerous, but just like the various complexities of doing what is right versus what is wrong, as we grow we must learn how to protect ourselves from the various dangers we face every day.

This is why safety as a profession is so important. We know it is painful to fall, but we are not born with knowledge of various fall protections. We all eventually learn that water can create slick surfaces, but it takes advanced knowledge to understand the static coefficients of friction for different working surfaces and how to properly implement safety measures in such scenarios. Workplace safety is a skill and it is the safety practitioner who continuously develops that skill and shares it with others.

No place is this truer than at NASA. The dangers of space travel are something everyone can wrap their heads around. What people may not know is that in 2006 as part of NASA’s Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, the NASA Safety Center (NSC) was created. The NSC provides safety and mission assurance expertise, information, verification, and analysis to enable collaboration and learning, while promoting a safe workplace and successful programs and projects. The NSC serves as a resource for all NASA centers and facilities, providing a central index of Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) knowledge, expertise, and education. The NSC serves to improve all aspects needed for the safe and successful achievement of NASA’s goals.
