The Barrow County Board of Education is composed of nine members. Board members serve a four-year term, with three districts elected at-large and six elected by district. The Board is the official governing body of the Barrow County School System.
Highlights of Presentation and Discussion Items
Naming of the New High School
Dr. Dale Simpson shared that a survey was conducted for community input on the naming of the new high school. After 30 days of public review, a name will be brought forward to the Board for a recommendation. You can review all of the names submitted on our website.
The 11th day attendance count was posted at 14,270 students. Dr. Matt Thompson shared that this first official enrollment count was an increase of 1.6% over the previous year.
Exact Path K-12 Intervention Program
Intervention Support Coordinator Laurie Gray presented information on the new platform from Exact Path for individualized learning paths. This web-based platform provides students with additional support based on their performance. It provides an individualized learning path that pinpoints academic needs for struggling students. This program will be piloted with about 10% of the student population. Download the entire presentation.
System Operations Report
Upcoming Projects

Cunningham Forehand Matthews and Moore were selected to perform design work on Statham Elementary School renovation work to be performed in the summer of 2020.

Smallwood Reynolds Stewart and Stewart will perform the design work for the classroom addition project at Westside Middle Schools.

Construction Updates

At the site of the new high school, you will see that the structural steel erection for the classroom building is well under way including the roof decking. Interior mechanical, electrical, and plumbing rough-in has begun. Concrete block is being installed in stairwells, mechanical and restrooms. Student Center building footprint is 100% complete. Concrete foundations for the Student Center is 100% complete.

The new synthetic turf fields are now available for use at each of the high schools. Each field will have a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the fields under the partnership of Barrow County SPLOST and the Board of Education.

Presentation of Colors

Cadets from the JROTC Program at Winder-Barrow High School presented the colors:

Governors Honors Program Finalists

The Barrow County School System nominated 25 extraordinary students to compete at the state level for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program, which is a residential summer program held for gifted and talented high school students who are in 10th or 11th grade. Two AHS students were selected as finalists:

  • Rubi Islas in Communicative Arts
