For many individuals, a past record can stand in the way of a better future—blocking opportunities for employment, education, and personal growth. One local participant, Lona Edwards, in the “From Record to Redemption Grant” recently shared how taking the step toward expungement has changed her life. Many of you may recognize her familiar face. She’s the one who greets you at Sonic by calling you “sweety.”
Karen Simpson, Assistant Director at Muhlenberg Economic Growth Alliance had the opportunity to share this funding opportunity with Lona and interviewed her upon her grant reward. When asked about her journey she shared, “My past really hindered me, it bothered me so much when I tried to get better employment or apply for college. I’m a different person now, and I simply want more for my life.”
While the expungement process can feel overwhelming, she emphasized the importance of patience and perseverance. “You have to trust the process. It takes time,” she said. Like many, she faced challenges—not only financially, but emotionally. “I worried about having enough money and felt embarrassed and scared going back to court. Before I didn’t care about anything, but I care now. My mindset is different.”
That’s where the grant made a meaningful difference. Administered by Muhlenberg Economic Growth Alliance (MEGA) through funding from the Felix E. Martin Jr. Foundation, the program reimburses up to half of expungement costs (not to exceed $500), helping remove a critical financial barrier. “This grant is truly a blessing,” she shared. “My husband and I both work, but when I leave here today with this money, I’m going to buy groceries—and I’m so excited about that.”
Now, with her record cleared and nine years of sobriety behind her, she’s focused on the future. She plans to apply for better job opportunities and return to college once her son starts school. Most importantly, she’s committed to being a positive role model for her children, her community, and others still struggling.
Her message to others considering expungement is simple: “Keep pushing forward. Take it one day at a time. It’s a process—but it’s so worth it in the end. Don’t let your past define you, because it’s not going to define mine any longer.”
