Be Still
Be still, and know that I am God. (Psalm 46:10)
A man was walking by the Dead Sea. He lost his balance and fell into the water. He could not swim. In his desperation, he did the only thing he could think to do. He started flinging his arms into the air until he was completely exhausted and could move no longer.
He discovered when he stopped using his energy to fling his arms, he didn't drown. That's because the water in the Dead Sea is so heavy with salt and other minerals that when he stayed still in it, he immediately floated on top of the water instead of being pulled below.
That's a good life application for us. There is a strong power beneath us, beside us, above us, and around us waiting to bear us up when we think we will drown in our troubles. God will act on our behalf when we cease all our floundering, flinging, and fruitless efforts to save ourselves.
The power of God undergirds us when we do what the psalmist says: "Be still and know that God is God."
