"On behalf of those who cannot speak for themselves but depend on honorable men and women for kindness, mercy and justice”

MISSION STATEMENT

Through donations received from members and the public, Animal Care and Welfare Inc.

offers assistance for low cost spays and neuters. We also operate our pet placement program by collaborating with shelters, carefully selecting homeless pets and placing them in loving homes.

BIANNUAL NEWSLETTER

ACW has had a busy year! When some of our shelter partners were in need of help, we answered the call.

Some pets were in rural shelters with very few adopters stopping by. Others were in overcrowded shelters where they were often overlooked by potential adopters. By taking the animals from these shelters, we were able to give many homeless pets a second chance at life. We would like to thank Amy’s Pet Parlor and Petagogy for welcoming ACW into their businesses and providing our adoption pets with the perfect opportunity to meet their new families.

By working together, we are all saving lives!

BECAUSE OF YOU, it is possible for us to continue this mission! Your donations provide our adoption pets with health checks, microchips, vaccines, spays, neuters, FeLV/FIV testing and heartworm testing. Visit us at www.givebigpittsburgh.com on December 2nd for Giving Tuesday and make a difference for homeless pets. Please spread the word about the important work we do and help make our campaign a success. Every donation makes a difference. Our adoption pets thank you!

ACW is always proud to educate our next generation in pet rescue.

We teach these young people the skills and knowledge involved in caring for

homeless pets and preparing them for adoption while nurturing empathy and

love of animals. We hope that we won’t have the need for pet rescue in the future,

but we are ensuring that there will be a group of future animal advocates ready to

take on the challenge.

HAPPY TAILS FOR BEBE

“We had been looking for a dog and happened to reach out to a friend of ours who

works with Animal Care and Welfare. She told us that she had the perfect dog for us.

The moment we saw Bebe, she came running straight to us and rolled over onto her

back so we could scratch her belly. We were in love. Just off of that interaction alone,

we were hooked, but not only that, she also checked all our boxes. She is potty trained, great with other dogs, loves everyone she meets, is great on walks, and she wants to

be loved and snuggled 24/7. We truly couldn’t have had better timing on finding her and

it truly feels like fate that we did, because we needed her in our lives just as much as

she needed us in her life. All in all, Bebe has been the perfect fit for us, she has settled into her new home very well, and we have so much love for our girl!

We wanna thank Animal Care and Welfare for connecting us together!!

OUR OBI…WHAT AN INSPIRATION

“Getting in touch with an update on our precious

tripod, Obi! We adopted him from you 9½ years ago

right after he had his back leg amputated. He is now

10½ years old and still the inspiration of our large adult community! People stop me almost on a daily basis to

let me know how much they admire him and how he

inspires them to become more physically active!

Thank you for continuing to give so many pets

a second chance.”

"A TAIL OF TWO KITTIES"

Gino (Carlisle) found the perfect forever home this

past summer. His adopters contacted us a month later wanting to add Cleo (Cricket) to their family too. We couldn’t contain our excitement, because these two kittens had been raised in a shelter together. Their reunion was simply heartwarming, but their happiness was disrupted when Cleo developed FIP. With the proper treatment though, she is doing very well now. Gino and Cleo are now inseparable and living the dream of a wonderful life with a loving family.

What is FIP? Feline Infectious Peritonitis is a serious viral disease caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus. Many cats are exposed to coronavirus,

but only a small percentage develop FIP. It is most common in young cats, particularly those under the

age of 2 years old. It can manifest in two forms.

Effusive (wet) FIP is characterized by fluid accumulation in the abdomen and chest leading to difficulty breathing, swollen abdomen, fever, weight loss and lack of appetite. Non-effusive (dry) FIP involves organ inflammation without the fluid buildup. Symptoms may include neurological issues, eye problems, fever, weight loss and lack of appetite. It is often fatal without treatment, but the recent development of antiviral medications is showing great promise in treating FIP. Cleo is an excellent example of their effectiveness. If you notice your cat experiencing any of the above symptoms, contact your veterinarian ASAP. Early detection is the key to success.
