BEDS Plus Street Outreach:
"This (program) should be much more well known."
BEDS Street Outreach benefits local communities

The BEDS Plus Street Outreach team, the first line of defense in our mission to help those who are experiencing homelessness, works tirelessly to find those who are without shelter.

Local police departments and communities we serve praise the Street Outreach team for the service it provides. The work the Street Outreach team does to help those on the streets frees up precious resources that communities would otherwise have to use to respond to those experiencing homelessness. Those experiencing homeless who accept shelter are placed in safe environments by the Street Outreach team.

"Honestly, I cannot appreciate you guys enough," a Tinley Park police officer said. "This (program) should be much more well known."

Congratulations to Dewey, who recently moved into our Permanent Supportive Housing program. Dewey traveled a long way to find home - he was originally on the streets in Chicago Heights before he was connected to BEDS through Coordinated Entry. Visit our Facebook page here to watch his excitement when he moves in!

BEDS Bulletin! The New York Times reported on how the COVID-19 pandemic has added a dangerous new complication to the homeless crisis in the U.S. Public spaces where people experiencing homelessness in the past could use to warm up during the day are often closed and traditional shelters have been forced to reduce capacity to maintain social distancing. At the same time, the pandemic's economic destruction has led to an increase in the number of people who need homeless services. Our Street Outreach team is frequently out our communities looking for those who are experiencing homelessness in an effort to get them out of the elements and into shelter as well as other services. Learn more about the work our Street Outreach team does here. Click here to read the NYT article.

Congrats to Chuck! Our Street Outreach team met Chuck in La Grange and brought him to shelter. Once sheltered, Chuck started to work toward housing. Move-in day was last week! Chuck also received his first COVID-19 vaccine dose. The work our Street Outreach team does was made possible by a Cook County Department of Economic Development grant. BEDS also coordinates with other agencies throughout the region to make sure there is sufficient community coverage.
