BEMC to Begin Street Light Upgrade Project on Monday, June 23rd

Beginning on Monday, June 23rd, Sumter Utilities under contract with Brunswick Electric Membership Corporation (BEMC) will begin a multi-week project to replace nearly 500 streetlights in the Reserve, Woodlands and Seaside areas with energy efficient fixtures. Construction will begin in the Reserve section before moving on to Woodlands and then the Seaside area later on this year.

The new energy efficient fixtures are designed to direct light downward, reducing light spill into nearby homes while improving illumination to the area below the light. These modern fixtures have no glass and feature the light source at the top of the unit.

The project also involves repainting all metal poles in the project area in a dark forest green to match the new fixtures. Approximately 60 poles will be painted per day, requiring 24-48 hours of drying time, depending on the condition of the pole. Following that drying period Sumter Utilities will install the new fixtures and energize the poles. During this drying period, a whole street or streets may experience temporary streetlight outages.

This project is funded by a $400,000 Carbon Reduction Grant awarded to the Town of St. James by the NC Department of Transportation.
