Preparing Loved Ones for Winter Safety!

Winter brings beautiful moments—holiday gatherings, cozy evenings, and the joy of family traditions. But for seniors, it can also introduce new risks. As temperatures drop, families play a key role in ensuring their loved ones stay safe, warm, and connected.

Here are 3 simple, practical steps to help keep seniors protected this winter:

1. Preventing Slips & Falls at Home

Cold weather often leads to icy walkways and wet floors.

A few small adjustments can make a big difference:

  • Add non-slip mats near entryways and showers
  • Keep walkways well-lit and free of clutter
  • Place salt or de-icer outside front doors
  • Encourage supportive, slip-resistant shoes
  • Install grab bars in slippery areas

A safe path starts with a safe home!

2. Preventing Holiday Loneliness

The holidays can be joyful—but also isolating for seniors with limited mobility or family living far away.

Ways to keep them socially connected:

  • Schedule regular video calls or visits
  • Invite them to simple, sensory-friendly holiday activities
  • Connect them with community events for seniors
  • Encourage involvement in hobbies or light crafts
  • Make sure daily social interaction doesn’t decrease during winter storms

Emotional warmth is just as important as physical warmth.

3. Building a Winter Emergency Kit

Unexpected winter storms can disrupt power, heat, and access to groceries or medications. An emergency kit ensures safety during these moments.

Include:

  • Flashlights & extra batteries
  • Bottled water and non-perishable snacks
  • Extra blankets and warm layers
  • Backup medications and a printed medication list
  • A phone power bank
  • A written emergency contact sheet
  • First aid supplies

Preparedness provides confidence for you—and peace for your loved one.

Checklist for Families With Aging Loved Ones

As we approach the close of the year, December becomes a natural moment to pause, reflect, and prepare. For families with aging loved ones, a little planning now can make a meaningful difference in safety, comfort, and peace of mind throughout the new year. This simple year-end checklist is designed to help families stay organized and proactive as we enter 2026.

1. Review Medical Appointments for the Upcoming Year

Before calendars fill up, take time to schedule or confirm key appointments—annual exams, specialist visits, vision and dental checkups, and any ongoing therapy sessions. Early planning helps ensure your loved one stays on track with their health needs without the stress of last-minute scheduling.

2. Refill Prescriptions Ahead of Winter Weather

With winter storms and holiday closures, pharmacy access can be unpredictable. Refill prescriptions now, check for any recent dosage changes, and ensure there is a safe supply of all essential medications on hand. When possible, request 90-day refills to simplify management during the colder months.

3. Check Expiration Dates and Functionality of Medical Equipment

Durable medical equipment plays a critical role in safety and daily comfort. Review items such as walkers, grab bars, oxygen supplies, blood pressure monitors, and incontinence products. Replace anything outdated, worn, or no longer effective to ensure reliable support going into the new year.

4. Update Emergency Contacts and Legal Documents

As families grow and life circumstances change, emergency and legal information should be refreshed. Verify that power of attorney documents, medical directives, and emergency contacts are current. Ensure each trusted person knows their role and has access to essential information if needed.

5. Reassess Care Needs for 2026

The holiday season often offers a clearer view of how a loved one is truly doing—physically, emotionally, and socially. Take note of changes in mobility, memory, appetite, mood, and daily routines. If additional support may be needed in 2026, BESTEMOR is here to help you explore safe, trusted care options tailored to your loved one’s needs.

Small steps now can create a smoother, safer, and more supported path ahead. This simple checklist is an easy way to ensure your loved one begins the new year with stability and confidence. If you need guidance, recommendations, or a care assessment as you look toward 2026, the BESTEMOR team is honored to support you every step of the way.

This Month’s Question:

When is the right time to consider assisted living?

  • Difficulty with daily tasks like cooking, bathing, or managing medications
  • Frequent falls or changes in mobility
  • Increased loneliness or isolation
  • Unintentional weight loss or poor nutrition
  • Trouble keeping up with bills, housekeeping, or home safety
  • Caregiver burnout or overwhelm

Our Advice:

Assisted living is not a loss of independence—it's a shift toward greater safety, support, and meaningful connection. Beginning the conversation early allows families to explore options calmly and confidently.

If you’re unsure whether now is the right time, the BESTEMOR Advisor Team is here to help you review care needs, understand options, and navigate next steps with confidence and compassion.

During this season of giving, we encourage families to also embrace the gift of rest. Rest refreshes the mind, strengthens emotional resilience, and allows caregivers to show up with renewed compassion. Whether you’re traveling, hosting, or simply catching quiet moments throughout the month, remember: caring for yourself enables you to better care for others.
