LEARN

Introducing Salt & Oaks! We’re excited to share BHA’s new newsletter, Salt & Oaks: “Where coast meets canopy.” This fresh publication replaces the Island Report and offers stories, updates, and images that celebrate our island’s people, places, and natural beauty.

Some of the photos in our first issue came directly from island owners, and our goal is for all the imagery to be community-provided, making Salt & Oaks truly created by and for Bald Head Island. Have a favorite photo of island life? Send it to us, and your shot could be featured in the next edition!

Operation Reforest Returns

Operation Reforest is back this fall! BHA will once again deliver live oaks, yaupon hollies, and wax myrtles to the island for planting in mid-November. Orders close at the end of October, so order now and don’t miss this cost-saving chance to add to Bald Head’s canopy.

Since 2019, this program has helped replace trees lost to storms, with options to plant on your lot, honor a loved one, or support new trees on BHA Common Area. Explore the map of past plantings and honorees at BHA’s website.

A big thank-you to our Resource Conservation & Beautification Committee and volunteers for keeping Bald Head Island green and growing!

LEADERSHIP

Your Island. Your Board.

Have a voice? Make it count by serving on the BHA Board! It’s a powerful way to contribute to the well-being of our community and shape the future of Bald Head Island. There are two positions open each year. The Nominating Committee plays a key role in identifying future BHA Board leaders. This year’s members are Michael Gandy, Alan Norton, Claude Pope, and Jordyn Matthews. Contact Nominating Committee Board Liaison Steve Smalley to learn more.

BHA Board Recap

The BHA Board met on August 22nd with plenty of good news to share. Finances are healthy, the Reserve Study is helping guide next year’s budget, and the BHA building and grounds have gotten a fresh look. The pollinator garden is thriving thanks to community care, and fall events are on the horizon. Committees are busy too, from planning future growth to preparing for the upcoming election. Stay tuned for more updates and be sure to join in on the events and efforts that keep our island community strong! You can watch the Public Session here.

The next Board meeting is 9/26/25 at 8:30 a.m. in BHA's Association Center (111 Lighthouse Wynd) or via the Zoom link. The agenda will be posted on the website when available.

Island Leaders in Conversation

The Bald Head Island Leadership Group met on August 7 to share priorities and strengthen collaboration across the Village, Club, Conservancy, Old Baldy Foundation, Chapel, and BHA. Highlights included the Village’s plans for public restrooms, park and pavilion enhancements, and ongoing beach nourishment efforts. The Club discussed its golf course renovation and the need for careful barge scheduling, while BHA focused on land preservation and additional boat storage space. Old Baldy is moving ahead with a capital campaign for a new museum, and the Chapel shared updates on new staff and expanded outreach.

The Conservancy encouraged renewed focus on the island’s identity of living in harmony with nature, along with ideas for youth gathering spaces and continued support for the red flashlight program. Leaders also discussed the importance of managing day visitors, strengthening pre-arrival messaging, and aligning project timelines to reduce conflicts. Follow-up meetings and working groups will keep this cooperative effort moving forward.
