Absentee Ballots Available for the 2019 Municipal Election

Absentee ballots are now available from the Brunswick County Board of Elections for the 2019 Municipal Election, which will be held on Tuesday, November 5th. 

CLICK HERE to download the Absentee Ballot Request Form that must be completed and submitted to the Brunswick County Board of Elections by 5pm on Tuesday, October 29th. Requests may be submitted by mail (Brunswick County Board of Elections, PO Box 2, Bolivia, NC 28422), fax (910-253-2618) or email (

BHI's polling location on November 5th is the Brunswick Center at Southport, 1513 N. Howe Street #1, Southport, NC. Polls will be open that day from 6:30am-7:30pm.

Council Candidate Forum

The Brunswick County League of Women Voters (BC-LWV) held a public forum for Council candidates on Thursday, September 26, 2019, from 4-6pm at the BHI Club. BHA served as Island host for the event.

US Army Corps of Engineers Intends to Deepen Channel to 47 Feet

Last week, the US Army Corps of Engineers released information about its early phase to deepen the federal navigation channel adjacent to BHI from +/- 42 feet to 47 feet.

2020 Design Guidelines to be Approved in October; Feedback Solicited from Members
Each year, the Architectural Review Committee and Karen Mosteller (BHA's ARC Coordinator) recommend updates to the organization's Design Guidelines for BHA's Board of Directors to consider for approval. The Board reviewed those recommendations and is looking for feedback from property owners prior to final approval at the regular Board meeting on Thursday, October 24th at 2pm. The meeting will be held in the Berne Room (upstairs) at the Association Center (111 Lighthouse Wynd.)

The draft 2020 Design Guidelines can be found on BHA's web site (

The final approved Design Guidelines will apply to submittals reviewed after January 1, 2020.

Member Survey on Transportation Revision Results Provided to Village Council Members

BHA's Board of Directors recently solicited feedback from property owners on portions of the Village of BHI's revision to its tr ansportation ordinance via an online survey. The survey was available from August 20 - September 10, 2019.

BHA's President John Fisher relayed members' opinions to the Council at its September public hearing. A full copy of the results was subsequently provided to Council members.

Property owners who didn't participate in the survey but want to relay their opinions to the Council should do so by sending their comments to Village Clerk Daralyn Spivey at The Council will consider the draft for final approval on Tuesday, October 15, 2019 at its regular monthly meeting. that begins at 2:30pm and is held at the Public Safety Department.

Join fellow Islanders at the next Island-Wide Litter Sweep on Saturday, October 26th from 10am - 2pm. Start at the Association Center where you'll receive a bag and a grabber then select a portion of the Island and get started! Community service hours available for kids.

Operation Re-Forest We Forest--

Management of BHI's Coyotes

At the direction of the Village Council, Village staff, in conjunction with the BHI Conservancy, is currently developing a plan to manage the population of coyotes on BHI. The Conservancy reports that a substantial number of loggerhead sea turtle eggs and nests were destroyed this year by the coyotes and asked the Village to intervene.

Note: BHA is currently planning a public information session about the habits and behaviors of coyotes to help humans understand what behaviors we must change in order to live in harmony with the Island's coyotes. A date and time will be announced when it is confirmed.
BHI Employee Appreciation Day

Please join Old Baldy Foundation in thanking all Island employees at the annual BHI Employee Appreciation Luncheon on Wednesday, October 9th from 11am - 1pm at the Old Baldy Grounds. The employees of all Island businesses and entities worked hard not only to make the 2019 summer season a success but also to help get the Island back into shape after Hurricanes Florence and Dorian.

Amani Bead Workshop

The Village Chapel's Outreach Committee is hosting an Amani Bead workshop on Friday, October 11th from 10am - noon at the Association Center, so gather your friends and make some jewelry together!  All proceeds will benefit the Amani Children's Home, which serves children orphaned by HIV/AIDS and poverty in Kenya.  Learn more about the Amani Children's home at

Flu Shots on BHI

Public Safety Department

The Brunswick County Health Services will offer flu shots on Friday, October 18th from 10am-2pm at the Public Safety Department. Both the high dose and regular flu shots will be available. Remember to bring your insurance card and a photo ID.

Shoals Club

Kick off the Halloween parties at the Shoals Club on Saturday, October 19th from 11am - 2pm with a Spooky Lunch and Costume Contest. Cost is $12 for temporary memberships and $8 for full.
