NC Rate Bureau Requests 17.4 Percent Rate Increase; Comments Due Feb. 26th

The North Carolina Rate Bureau has requested a 17.4 percent increase in homeowners' insurance rates effective October 1, 2019. The Rate Bureau claims this year's increase is needed to cover increased losses, hurricane losses and the net cost of reinsurance.
Last year, the Rate Bureau requested an 18.9 percent increase in homeowners' insurance rates, but Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey settled, instead, on an average 4.8 percent rate increase.
A public comment period is required by law to give the public time to address the Rate Bureau's proposed rate increase. BHI property owners are encouraged to provide comments on the proposed rate.
There are three ways to provide comments:
  • A Public Comment forum will be held to listen to public input on the Rate Bureau's rate increase request at the N.C. Department of Insurance's Second Floor Hearing room on February 26, 2019, starting at 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. The Department of Insurance is located in the Albemarle Building, 325 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, N.C.
  • Emailed public comments should be sent by February 26, 2019, to:
  • Written public comments should be mailed to Tricia Ford, Paralegal Administrator, to be received by February 26, 2019, and addressed to 1201 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1201.
BHA will keep property owners informed of any developments regarding the proposed increase.

Annual Meeting Recap; Wildlife Overlook Discussion Held

BHA's 2019 Annual Meeting was held on Saturday, Jan. 26th. Over 100 property owners filled the room to hear updates and learn about accomplishments not only from BHA but also from each of the Island's major entities. John Fisher was re-elected and John Kinney was elected to the Board of Directors. Later that day, the Board elected the following officers: John Fisher, President; Anne Boozell, Vice President; and, Robert Drumheller, Secretary/Treasurer.

Immediately after the Annual Meeting, the Board took the opportunity to discuss with property owners the status of the Wildlife Overlook that is located on Stede Bonnet Wynd. The Overlook was damaged during Hurricane Florence and has not yet been repaired due to the backlog of construction projects contractors are juggling.

While some owners have expressed concerns about keeping the Overlook open, the overwhelming majority of those who've expressed their opinions want it to remain open and available to the public. The Board is working to find a reasonable solution that is safer and more attractive than the current platform and fencing.

The Board thanks all who've taken time to let their opinions be known. Stay tuned for more information.
