Dear Fellow Islanders,
As you may have heard, I recently asked a small group of full-time and part-time residents of Bald Head Island to explore potential mechanisms for part-time residents (who by law are unable to vote in Village elections) to have a more formal mechanism for voicing ideas, questions, and concerns about Bald Head Island’s governance to our elected officials.
As part of their work, they have put together a brief survey intended for both part-time and full-time residents in an effort to develop a better understanding of this topic. The information gained from this survey will be used to help develop specific recommendations to improve the ability of part-time resident property owners to have a voice in our island's governance.
We will have the survey available for the next 10 days, and it should take no more than 5 or 6 minutes to complete. Click the link below to access it.
Thank you in advance for taking a few minutes to complete this questionnaire!

New Village Pine Straw Ordinance
Effective May 1, 2022
|
|
From the Village of BHI:
The use of pine straw and other ground cover materials with a fire rate of spread of more than 24 inches per minute as determined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) presents a serious fire hazard and threatens structures.
“Pine straw is seven to ten times more combustible than any other mulching material, said Public Safety Director Alan May, “and natural resins in pine straw make it very flammable. An errant cigarette can ignite it in a matter of seconds and if it happens to be close to a structure, the structure will ignite as well.”
For these reasons, the Village will begin regulating the use of pine straw and other ground cover materials with a fire rate of spread more than 24 inches per minute as determined by the NIST.
The ordinance states that “no pine straw or any other landscape material with a fire rate spread more than 24 inches per minute shall be placed, kept, or stored within 25 feet of any building or other structure with a combustible exterior.”

From the Village of BHI
Heading into the peak season, the Village would like to make sure Island Package Center and Post Office customers fully understand the process for receiving packages on Bald Head Island.
If you are expecting a package from UPS or FedEx, you will typically receive a message from these carriers when your package arrives. Don’t make the mistake that many folks do and assume it is on the island, because it is not. The package has made it to the final destination for the carrier, the Deep Point warehouse. The package then must be transported to BHI via the barge. The timing of the arrival at Deep Point determines when the package is likely to arrive on BHI. If it arrives late in the day, which most often occurs with FedEx packages, the package will likely come over the next day.
Weekends (when the barge does not operate) and weather delays can also have an impact on the timing of delivery to the island. The best rule of thumb is to rely on the email and/or text you receive from the IPC/PO indicating your package is ready for pick up. To make sure you are on the list to receive these emails, please speak with one of our IPC/PO associates at the counter or email public.information@villagehbi.org so your request can be relayed to IPC staff.
