New Village Pine Straw Ordinance
Now in Effect as of May 1, 2022
From the Village of BHI:

The use of pine straw and other ground cover materials with a fire rate of spread of more than 24 inches per minute as determined by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) presents a serious fire hazard and threatens structures.

“Pine straw is seven to ten times more combustible than any other mulching material, said Public Safety Director Alan May, “and natural resins in pine straw make it very flammable. An errant cigarette can ignite it in a matter of seconds and if it happens to be close to a structure, the structure will ignite as well.”

For these reasons, the Village will begin regulating the use of pine straw and other ground cover materials with a fire rate of spread more than 24 inches per minute as determined by the NIST.

The ordinance states that “no pine straw or any other landscape material with a fire rate spread more than 24 inches per minute shall be placed, kept, or stored within 25 feet of any building or other structure with a combustible exterior.”

Read the ordinance HERE. Read the full Village announcement HERE.

Feature of the Month — Yoga

This month's featured class is yoga. Yoga instructor Pam Moulin has been coming to Bald Head Island to teach yoga classes at the Association Center (111 Lighthouse Wynd) for 12 years. Her classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays, 11:45am-1:15pm, throughout the year.

Pam has 35 years of experience as a fitness instructor and 18 years of experience as a yoga instructor. One of Pam's regular participants described her classes as "wonderful," and a new participant said, "I LOVE your class! I'll be back!"

Want to attend a class? All levels are welcome. Classes are $20, and participants must bring their own yoga mat. Pam requires that all participants show proof of vaccination against Covid-19. For all new participants, it's strongly suggested to email Pam beforehand (and let her know of any physical limitations) at pammoulin@ec.rr.com.

Don't forget to check BHA's calendar frequently for events in BHA's Generator Society Hall at the Association Center (111 Lighthouse Wynd). Many special events are sponsored by BHA's committees, so don't miss out.
