Youth Hangout - Let Our Voices Be Heard
|
(October 30th)
In response to Merced Youth Council's needs to fill 3 spots on their committee, The BHC Neighborhood Action Team hosted a youth hangout last Thursday to help with recruitment and assistance in the Youth Council application process. Over fifteen young people came out seeking information about the youth council and how they can apply. Many had questions about the application's lengthy requirements, which stirred a lot of confusion and concerns of their qualifications.
"I want to make a difference in my community and I think being part of the youth council is the start but I can't even get pass the application," one youth member said.

Regardless, the youth hangout served its purpose. It shined a light of encouragement to at least tryout. It gave young people hope that their voices can be heard regardless of what the city deems to be youth council worthy. As a community it is our duty to create opportunities for all young people. Merced is on the right track with the youth council. Let's keep that momentum and #InvestInOurYouth.
