Celebrating a Decade of Neuroscience Excellence at the Tenth Annual BHI Symposium

The 2024 BHI Symposium marked the 10th anniversary of the Rutgers Brain Health Institute, a milestone for celebrating a decade of innovation, collaboration, and groundbreaking advancements in neuroscience. Held on November 14–15 at the Douglass Student Center, the two-day event brought together more than 300 academic leaders, researchers, trainees, and industry professionals.

The symposium kicked off with an introduction by Chancellor Brian Strom of Rutgers Health and featured presentations by BHI Center Directors, new Rutgers neuroscience faculty, and outstanding postdocs. Day two included a captivating and informative keynote address from Dr. John H. Morrison of UC Davis.

This year’s symposium featured new and exciting elements. Attendees enjoyed the Two-minute Flash Talks by poster presenters, previewing on the main stage, key highlights from their posters displayed at the daily poster session. We doubled the poster awards to recognize outstanding research posters from both days, spotlighting the next generation of neuroscience talent.

Also new this year, the Brain Art Exhibition showcased trainees' creative interpretations of neuroscience and brain health, adding an inspiring visual dimension to the symposium experience.

By uncovering these cellular foundations, the research offers critical insights into cognition and mental health.

BHI Commentary: Insights on Brain Stimulation Device for Slowing Alzheimer's Symptoms

Learn more

BHI core faculty members Drs. Michal Schnaider Beeri, David Zald, and Andrew Westbrook have shared insights on a recent study investigating transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a potential treatment to slow cognitive decline in Alzheimer's Disease. The study focuses on targeting a key brain network involved in memory, which is typically impacted early in the disease. Read the full commentary.

Dr. Michal Schnaider Beeri Shares Insights in Medscape Article on Primary and Dementia Care

Learn more

Dr. Michal Schnaider Beeri, Director of the Krieger Klein Alzheimer’s Research Center at BHI, shared insights in a Medscape article titled “Integrated Neuro, Primary Care Reduces Rates of Potentially Dangerous Rx Among Dementia Patients.” The article highlights a poster presented at the Gerontological Society of America 2024 Annual Scientific Meeting in Seattle, which examines the benefits of merging primary care with dementia care. Research from the Integrated Memory Care Center (IMCC) at Emory University found that patients seen in their clinic had higher rates of deprescribing potentially harmful medications compared to those receiving care at standalone cognitive neurology or primary care clinics. Dr. Beeri noted, "IMCC is a promising model with the potential to significantly improve outcomes and quality of life for both patients and their caregivers. However, widespread adoption would require changes in insurance coverage and healthcare delivery systems.”

Francesca LoFaro Awarded NIDA F31 Grant for Research on Opioid Use Disorder in Women

Learn more

Francesca LoFaro, a PhD candidate in BHI core faculty Dr. Anna Konova’s lab, has received a three-year F31 grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse for the project “Elucidating How Menstrual Cycle Phase Influences Neurocognitive Processes Underlying Risk-Taking in Women with Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)”. The research aims to address the underrepresentation of women in neuroimaging studies of OUD. By investigating how menstrual cycle phases and hormone fluctuations affect risk-taking and relapse vulnerability, the research seeks to uncover hormonal and neural mechanisms underlying sex differences in OUD clinical outcomes.
