Managing Mental Health Concerns Around the Holidays

This month's BHIPP Bulletin is a contribution from Lily Stavisky, BA, BHIPP Outreach & Training Coordinator.

The holiday season brings joy, laughter, and celebration amongst families and friends. However, for some it can be stressful, lonely, and overwhelming, and for those with mental health concerns or disorders, these feelings can be exacerbated. There are a lot of different reasons why the holiday season may be difficult for pediatric patients and their families including social and family dynamics, managing and traveling to various holiday events, and coping with grief from the loss of a loved one. Pediatric primary care providers can support the patients and families they serve during the holiday season by:

  • Encouraging families to maintain their routines (e.g., morning routine, bedtime routine) because changes in routines can cause stress for children and adolescents. Keeping a regular schedule will provide structure, make children feel more secure, and make things feel more manageable.
  • Empowering patients and families to establish healthy boundaries with friends and family by saying no to holiday events that will be stressful or invoke negative emotions.
  • Teaching patients mindfulness and relaxation techniques for stressful moments.
  • Encouraging patients to engage in pleasant activities to reduce stress and improve their mood (e.g., going on a walk, reading a book, listening to music).
  • Normalizing the range of feelings children and adolescents can experience when grieving the loss of a loved one during the holiday season.
  • Assisting patients and families in locating support or resources for mental health concerns.

BHIPP Has Provided Over 11,000 Co-location Social Work Visits!

The BHIPP team is proud to share that the BHIPP co-location social work interns from Salisbury University have provided over 11,000 visits to children and adolescents in pediatric primary care practices in Maryland! BHIPP interns are co-located in pediatric primary care practices as part of their graduate school internships and receive yearlong instruction and supervision from faculty and staff at University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University, and Salisbury University while providing screening, brief intervention, and referral to families. This important initiative grows Maryland’s workforce while increasing access to behavioral health care for children in underserved communities.
