The NYSPA Report: Overdose Prevention Centers Keep Our People Alive

There is a high prevalence of serious mental illness (SMI) among people with opioid use disorder (OUD) and the increasing number of overdose deaths in the US. Harm reduction interventions, such as syringe service programs, naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and overdose prevention centers, have been proven effective in reducing the negative consequences associated with substance use and saving lives, but legal barriers have hindered their widespread implementation. Amending the federal "Crack House Statute" could remove barriers to providing life-saving treatment.
