WOLVERINE WEEK IN REVIEW

September 7th to September 12th 2026

Girls Soccer

Bellevue Girls Varsity Soccer

Girls’ soccer played two non-conference games last week against top tier opponents. On Tuesday, we traveled to Maple Valley to play 4A State Finalists, Tahoma High School. The game ended in a 1-1 draw (goal from Saleen Koszorus '27). On Thursday, Bellevue hosted 3A State Semi-Finalist Eastside Catholic and posted a 1-0 victory. This week we host Holy Names on Monday at 7:30 at Bellevue Stadium before opening our Kingco regular season against North Creek on Wednesday. Thank you to all the students who attended our game on Thursday!

Marching Band

The Bellevue Band participated in Husky Band Day at UW last Saturday and made history (we think) by being the first marching band to arrive by light rail! The trip went well, and we got many smiles from Sound Transit workers and other people riding the train as we boarded with drums and sousaphones!

The Band is looking forward to performing at the first BHS home football game this Friday. The halftime show celebrates the World Cup, and we hope all Wolverine fans will participate with us as we recreate Norway's Viking Row!

Girls Volleyball

This past week school moved into full swing mode, and everyone is settling into their routines now with school, friends, homework, activities, teachers, and counselors. For us it meant our first multi competition week playing at Bothell and Eastlake. It also meant our first competition for our JVC team. Nothing beats the feeling of being part of a team and competing with your teammates.

First up on Wednesday were JVC and JV at Bothell.  JVC playing in their first match of the season was exciting for the athletes and a little

nerve wracking. Responding to an unfamiliar opponent is different than responding to teammates in practice. As the match continued, longer and longer rallies ensued and more of what was learned in practice started appearing in the match. Despite dropping the match 0-3, it was neat seeing the camaraderie, the joy of competition and the pride of representing Bellevue High School. JV bounced back from last week’s loss to Wenatchee by defeating Bothell JV 2-1 in an exhilarating seesaw battle that had parents on the edge of their seats. Closing the evening was Varsity. As with the previous week, Varsity’s focus is on getting things in place, competing hard, dealing with

moments of competition and developing team chemistry.  Varsity dropped the match 3-1; however, it was good to see the team’s ability to control

parts of the match in tiny chunks and show resilience in the face of large deficits.

Next on the docket was at Eastlake on Thursday.  Even without an intervening practice between matches, JVC continued to show improvement

by settling their nerves. JVC, who played a guaranteed 3 games, left the court with a win defeating Eastlake JVC 3-0. JV followed suit, winning

all 3 of their games to notch their win streak at 2.  Varsity closed the evening with a loss, but not without a lot of positive takeaways, one of which was

mental resilience. In the first game that saw a couple of lead changes and a deficit of 14-20, Varsity fought back to lose that set 22-25. In the second game, it would have been easy to fold, being down 21-24 with Eastlake serving. A fortuitous, missed serve followed by a timely serving run by freshman, Kathryn Huhs, capped a 5-point scoring streak to win the game 26-24. Despite the loss, our confidence continues to grow.

Next week will be a physically taxing week as we play 3 matches in 4 days. First up will be Issaquah at their place on Monday. Then a practice day on Tuesday, followed by back-to-back matches on Wednesday and Thursday vs Inglemoor and at Redmond, respectively. The Inglemoor match is our first conference match, and it will be at home. Let’s make Bellevue HS the best home court in the conference. Hope to see your there on Wednesday.

Boys Water Polo

The Bellevue Boys’ Water Polo team kicked off its season Saturday at the Washington Division 1 State Jamboree at Curtis High School in University Place. Facing three tough opponents, Bellevue finished the day 3-0 and showed plenty of grit, teamwork, and early season promise. The annual tournament gives teams a chance to see top competition before league play begins.

Bellevue opened with a thrilling 6-6 tie against Kennedy Catholic that was decided by RoShamBo due to tournament time constraints. After dropping the first round, Bellevue rallied back and secured the win with a well-timed choice of paper. The Wolverines followed with a 5-1 victory over Shorewood, highlighted by a huge penalty-shot save from the Bellevue goalkeeper.

The final game of the day tested Bellevue's resilience as the team fell behind Curtis Blue 3-0 early. After regrouping at halftime, the Wolverines stormed back with four unanswered goals to complete a 5-3 comeback victory. Bellevue now turns its focus to the regular season and a busy week ahead.

This Week's Schedule

  • Monday: Bainbridge Island at Olympic High School (Bremerton)
  • Tuesday: Shorewood at Innis Arden Pool
  • Thursday: HOME MATCH vs. Kennedy Catholic, 4:20 PM at Woodridge Pool (Giveaway items for Students who attend)

Girls Swimming and Diving

Girls Swim & Dive made a statement in their first meet, cruising past Interlake 142–41, and racking up 3 state-qualifying times:

200 Medley Relay, 1:50.70

Sutton Forbis (12), Jessica Li (10), Bella Wong (11), Cklaire Gao (10)

Sutton Forbis (12), 100 Back, 57.60

400 Free Relay, 3:43.94

Brooklyn Lang (09), Claire Gao (10), Emma Li (09), Sutton Forbis (12)

They wrapped up the week with a memorable team retreat at Warm Beach Camp - full of team building, connection, and plenty of fun!

Varsity Football

Week 2 of the varsity football season was a trip down to Sparks Stadium to play Washington’s top ranked team, the Puyallup Vikings.

The game started fast with Bellevue and Puyallup trading long scoring drives (a touchdown from Junior Trevon Barnes). Bellevue scored again on a run by Gino Esquibel as the half expired to cut Puyallup’s lead to 22-14.

As the rain started to fall, two of the top ranked teams in the state traded punishing body blows, but a crucial 4th down stop on Puyallup’s 1 yard line gave the Vikings the momentum they needed to ice the win, 32-14.

Coach Kneip said of the game, “We just played one of the best teams on the west coast and went toe to toe with them. Games like that are an amazing benchmark of where we need to get to. Our goal is never to win a regular season game, it’s to win a state championship and become elite people off the field.”

Varsity hosts 1A perennial power Lynden Christian at home this Friday.

Bellevue Freshman Football — Weekly Update

The Bellevue freshmen battled through a tough loss this past week against Kennedy’s combined JVC team, 35-7. Outside of four explosive plays, our boys hung tough and won the second half, showing grit, improvement, and resilience.

A lot of our freshmen saw their first real football action, which made the night exciting and meaningful for the entire program.

We now turn our focus to Puyallup this Wednesday at home at 7 PM. The team is locked in and ready to build on last week’s momentum.

This week’s standout players — Ezra Fegauiai, Nikolai Gouzoun, and Joey Scapa — brought strong effort and consistency throughout practice.

Let’s pack the stands Wednesday night. Go Bellevue!

Boys Tennis

After two and a half weeks of hard work at practice, the Bellevue Boys Tennis team finally got their first crack at interscholastic competition on Thursday against longtime local rival Sammamish. The Varsity squad, coming off a WIAA 4th place State finish last season, only returns a few players from last year’s run. And with five players out due to an International School overnight retreat, the Wolverines brought nearly an entirely new squad to the match, relying heavily on a handful of fresh faces from JV. Jacob Feng, a talented freshman, slotted into the #1 singles spot against seasoned veteran Willy Hackett, a talented player with past Kingco tournament experience and success. After losing a competitive first set, Feng bageled Hackett 6-0 in the second. Showing self-belief, poise, and an ability to play free under pressure, Feng continued to apply pressure, eventually wearing Hackett down for an 11-9 third set tiebreaker win. After the match, he said it may be the best opponent he'd ever beaten. With relentless drive, #2 freshman Wesley Han overcame early struggles to win in straight sets. #3 sophomore Sena Uehara, after coming back 2-5 to win the first set 7-5, lost the second set 0-6, yet demonstrated amazing resilience, endurance, and mental fortitude in a third set tiebreak triumph. At #4 singles, sophomore Roger Ma's steady demeanor in clutch situations--including a second set tiebreaker win--ensured his victory.

Every single doubles team played a Varsity match together for the very first time. Juniors Jinue Kang and Nathan Winget overcame a first set loss and eventually prevailed in a 10-7 third set tiebreak. Juniors Sky Ko and Roy Kang embodied Bellevue's aggressive doubles attitude, actively prowling for opportunities to dominate at the net, winning 6-0, 6-2. And sophomores Jonah Chianglin and Micah Cho flashed strong serves and a confident return game in a straight set win.

What stood out in this match is the players' response to pressure situations, sweeping Sammamish 4-0 in tiebreaks. Very proud of the guys for fighting so admirably with belief, confidence, and a spirited attitude. A 7-0 match score in these circumstances is impressive. And JV, with almost an entirely new roster, won their first match 6-1.

The Wolverines have a busy next week, hosting a Kingco league match versus Liberty on Monday, a tough Overlake team on Tuesday, traveling to undefeated powerhouse Mercer Island on Thursday, and capping off their week with a fun trip to beautiful and historic Stadium High School on Friday. Go Bellevue!!!

Boys Golf

What a great win on Tuesday over Mercer Island! It's the fourth year in a row that our boys have beaten the Islanders in the regular season. MI has a great program, so it's a big accomplishment for the team! This time it was a 179-185 victory at Twin Rivers GC.

Once again Gordy Rounds led the way by shooting an even par 34. It was a steady round for Gordy with a birdie, a bogey and 7 pars. Boden Freeborn finished second on the day shooting a 1-over 35 that included a birdie-birdie finish on holes 8 and 9. Eric Kim and Edeun Park each fired a 36 for the Wolverines. Both Eric and Edeun had unfortunate double bogeys, but they didn't let them stop them, and each finished later with 2 birdies. That takes a lot of mental toughness! Rounding out the scoring for Bellevue was Eric Nguyen with a strong 38. Lastly, a special shout-out to Jake Lee playing only his second varsity match and shooting a solid 43.

The 2-0 Wolverines play at Cedarcrest this Monday.

CHEER

Cheer update

It was a great night for football in Puyallup on Saturday! Our Wolverines battled hard in an exciting matchup against the #1‑ranked team in the state. Even though the final score didn’t go our way, the team showed grit, heart, and determination from start to finish.

Next week, we’re back home for Bellevue’s first home game of the season against Lynden Christian — and it’s Jr. Night! We’re thrilled to welcome our Jr. Wolverines to the field and celebrate the future of Bellevue spirit.

Let’s pack the stands, Bellevue!

Dance Team

We are Bellevue High School's dance team, comprised of:

Blue Squad, our primary spirit squad, and Gold Squad, our competition team.

Blue Squad performs at football games, assemblies, basketball games, and more.

Gold Squad competes in dance competitions at the local and state level against other high schools from around the state.

Together, the dancers make up a supportive and dedicated team where each member can grow as a dancer and as a person while contributing to the spirit and culture of BHS!

Cross Country

Another great week of training together yielded great results, some eye-opening insights, and sowed the seeds of even greater success down the road. Monday's stadium-hills-plus-200-meter circuit got engines revved up; a nice Tuesday jog around the Bellefield office park and Surrey Downs helped build the engines out and add to their endurance. A nice short easy jog Wednesday around campus helped shake off any rust and sore muscles, while a team picture in brand-new, fresh-out-of-the-box uniforms added an element of team unity.

Thursday saw pleasant, sunny skies, a fast, flat, dry course, and several courageous performances, including many younger students performing like seasoned veterans, and seasoned veterans taking their places at the front of the team and spearheading our success. Afterward, with wide eyes and endorphins coursing through their veins, stories and laughter were shared, and sights set on future triumphs and success.

Friday saw the team take an easy jog together around downtown park, and letting off some steam with a friendly round of X-Game.

Saturday brought the team back to Lake Sammamish state park, site of the BELLEVUE CROSS COUNTRY INVITE, SATURDAY 9/19 :)

The team enjoyed a nice healthy long run on another pleasant Saturday morning, followed by a pizza party courtesy of our wonderful cross country booster club (thank you again!).

Two meets next week: Wednesday 9/16 at Liberty HS with Newport; and Saturday 9/19's BELLEVUE CROSS COUNTRY INVITE at Lake Sammamish state park, action begins at 9:30am through 3:00pm, come one, come all.

It’s GREAT to be a WOLVERINE!!!

Bellevue Linemen Step Up When Needed

Maceo Bickley-Hoff and Derrick Peterson embraced Bellevue’s “next-man-up” mentality and made the most of their opportunity against Kennedy Catholic.

IF you spent any time watching Hard Knocks, you learned about the unique way the Seahawks use their practice squad, instead calling it the “ready squad.”

This unique approach to developing players is inclusive, keeping those not currently in the lineup preparing for the moment they’re asked to step in and contribute.

For Bellevue’s Maceo Bickley-Hoff and Derrick Peterson, they approached this fall as if they were on the Wolverines’ ready squad. When their names were called, they planned on being ready.

“It’s a blessing,” Bickley-Hoff said. “The coaches and players know we’re going to do our job, counting on us to make the plays so the other guys can eat.”

The Wolverines’ offense depends on the offensive line executing its assignments. And last week against Kennedy Catholic, Peterson and Bickley-Hoff made sure there were running lanes for their teammates.

“Here at Bellevue, we always have a next-man-up mentality,” Bickley-Hoff said. “We were ready to go out and do our job.”

Peterson added, “It was really awesome to see all the work I put in during the offseason pay off and be able to get out there and get some reps.”

However, while it’s nice to play, both players acknowledged there is still work to do.

“There are things to work on, but we’re just working to get better week by week, stacking bricks and getting better,” Peterson said.

If Bickley-Hoff and Peterson have their names called again against top-ranked Puyallup on Saturday, they’ll be ready.

“In practice, we always say we make every play like a game rep,” Bickley-Hoff said. “It helps us get right, establish that mindset so we’re ready to go in the game, no matter who we’re playing against.”
