Welcome Ballard Beavers to the 2020-21 school year!
First day of school virtual 9 a.m. Sept. 4
|
Welcome BHS families to the 2020-21 School year! School begins online 9 a.m. Friday, Sept. 4.
Principal Keven Wynkoop sent a "Back to School Details" letter on Aug. 21 detailing academic expectations and information about laptop and materials pickup for the new school year. (See details about laptop pickup under "Save the Dates" below.)
"Although this is not the start that any of us wanted to the school year, I am most concerned for the safety of our students and families, so I happy that our remote start will help keep our community safe," he said.
"This will be a school year like none that have come before, but if our community sticks together we can accomplish anything," he noted. "Keep staying safe and healthy and we will be in the halls of BHS in the not too distant future. In the meantime, remember that it is always great to be a Beaver!"
|
Class schedules should be on Source 6 p.m. Aug. 28
|
Paper copies of student schedules will be available (if needed) when students come on their designated day for laptop pick-up the following week.
|

Welcome to BHS, Class of 2024!
|
"Whether you were already a Ballard family or if this is your first student in high school, it is my extreme pleasure to welcome you and your student to Ballard High School!" enthused Mr. Wynkoop.
"I know that the conditions that we are starting school in is a far cry from the experience that we normally would like to create for all of you, but it is my sincere hope that you will all look back on this as a small blip on your student’s otherwise amazing high school experience."

BHS Families: Do you have a recent Ballard graduate? Please do not unsubscribe to PTSA newsletters. You will automatically stop receiving the PTSA Newsletter but will remain on file for important alumni info.
It is helpful, however, to correlate your newsletter email with a younger sibling grade level if you want to keep receiving the weekly PTSA newsletter this school year.
Some families are surprised come fall when they have "graduated" off the mail list. Send your younger student's graduation class information to [email protected] and we'll make sure it's a seamless transition come fall.
Please also contact the editor if you'd like to add a secondary and/or student email address to the newsletter mail list.
Thank you!

SCPTSA details concerns for remote learning to SPS/SEA leadership
|
|
|
|
BHS PTSA Legislative Liaison Brian Duncan shared the following communication as his August Legislative Update. Letter has been amended for space.
SCPTSA President Manuela Slye sent this letter to Superintendent Denise Juneau, Seattle Education Association, and the SPS School Board on behalf of the SCPTSA families on Aug. 17, listing concerns for the Fall start of school.
Superintendent Denise Juneau | School Board Members | SEA Leadership: Our council has listened to our students and families and on their behalf we make the following recommendations:
- Verify that 100% of students have adequate internet access and deployment of devices before the first day of school. Training for families and students on how to get on Microsoft Teams and Schoology is crucial and must be completed before starting classes;
|
|
- 100% coverage of district issued laptops for educators, paraeducators, instructional assistants and everyone else providing education and services to students;
- An attendance policy and and follow-up plan that includes learning supports and wellness checks.
- A grading policy that recognizes the needs and barriers of students receiving special education services and students furthest from educational justice that does not further exacerbate the opportunity gap and can potentially harm and punish students for issues beyond their control;
- Completion of MANDATORY Professional Development for educators including but not limited to:
- Anti-bias, Anti Blackness, Race, Equity and Inclusion training. School administrators and teachers must be trained on best practices in Family Engagement with a rubric and evaluation.
- Remote learning teaching best practices and internet etiquette.
- Mental Health support for students.
