Vaccination Clinics to be offered at BHS

Ballard High School, with Seattle Public Schools, is hosting Vaccine Clinics of the Pfizer COVID-19 to all eligible students who would like to receive it and have parent/guardian consent (for under 18).
The vaccine will be administered by employees from Swedish Hospital in partnership with the City of Seattle. Consent form available below.
WHO:
Vaccines are for SPS students, 12 and older, and their family members. No pre-registration is required.
WHEN:
Clinics are from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants must be available for BOTH dates:
1st Vaccine on May 18 with 2nd Vaccine on June 8
- OR -
1st Vaccine May 20 with 2nd Vaccine on June 10
WHERE:
Ballard High School Auxiliary Gym | Students will be excused from their classes to get their 1st dose vaccines. They will need to enter the gym doors on the North side of the building.

Naramore Art Show features BHS artists |
The Naramore Art Show celebrates more than 200 artworks by Seattle Public School’s middle and high school students.
Check out the Virtual Museum from May 12 through June 30, including BHS senior photographer Dylan Nicole Hansen's work, on the Naramore Art Show webpage. Congratulations to the 10 participating BHS student artists, listed below, as well as their painting/drawing teacher Matt Harkelroad and photography teacher Gina O'Neill!
Naramore is a partnership with Seattle Art Museum and this year, due to COVID-19, it will be a virtual museum on the SPS website with a celebration on SPS TV, and Instagram postings for students to show what they’ve been creating at home, using the hashtag #artistsofsps
Artists' work will be celebrated on SPS TV Channel 26: May 21 at 6 p.m.

Caps, Gowns, other Grad products will be distributed, and any senior t-shirts not picked up. Students can come either day if needed. Will be in the BHS Back Parking Lot.

The SPREE Committee is busy planning the Seniors' Graduation Night Party for June 16.
Senior SPREE is an all-night party hosted and chaperoned by BHS PTSA parents and staff, in collaboration with the professional graduation party company, Grad Nights. Tickets are $180, check with your Counselor if you are interested in a scholarship.

SPREE is back! But we need your support as chaperones to help the celebration happen!
Class of 2022: It's a BHS tradition for Junior parents/guardians to chaperone at SPREE and "pay it forward" so senior parents can rest easy, knowing their newly graduated Beavers are having a safe and fun evening. It's also a great way for Junior parents to preview what the party will be like for their teens next June!

We are currently in need of a group of about 20 parents/guardians to help with chaperone duties from 10 p.m. Wednesday, June 16 until 8 a.m. Thursday, June 17. (If enough people sign up to help, the evening can be broken up into two shifts.)

Scholarship for Korean American students |
A scholarship opportunity for Korean American Juniors and Seniors living in Washington State is now available. The Korean Community Service Center (KCSC) and YouthKAN have created a scholarship fund to support youth who are working toward social change and (re)defining what it means to be a Korean American youth today.
They will be awarding three (3) $2000 scholarships and all applicants will also receive a small award for their submission. Applications will close on May 31st at 11:59 p.m.

Volunteering can give a teen a chance to try out an interest in a possible career. Volunteering with a vulnerable population can be the highlight of their day and yours. Certainly, volunteering during COVID-19 is challenging but brainstorming for ideas is always on the table. Committing even one to two hours per week benefits you and the organization. Volunteering with an organization you support benefits the community and you will get back more than ever imagined. So which organization will you pick?

Spring Awakening | BPA Musical Spring Production

Congratulations to the Ballard Performing Arts on the staging of the acclaimed musical Spring Awakening. Ballard’s virtual production was directed by Shawn M. Riley with musical direction by BHS choir teacher Courtney Rowley. Eia Waltzer choreographed the show and BHS alumnus Gustavo Gutierrez was director of photography and editing.

Caffe Appassionato Coffee Sales are back! Order your favorite coffee ONLINE and directly support a BPA student. Just specify their name on the order! For every bag purchased, the student named will earn $6 in credits that can be used towards future trips, camps, and program fees. Otherwise, proceeds with no student named will go into the BPA general fund.

Grab & Go meals offered at BHS |
Grab & Go breakfast and lunch meals are available during in-person learning days. Meals may be picked up at the entrance by the gym doors only.
Food is available and free for all students, and while students are not able to eat in the classroom, they may save it and snack on it during the day by stepping into the hall during class for a short time.

Skills Center Summer Courses |
The Seattle Skills Center will be offering remote and in-person career-connected classes this summer for incoming 9-12 grade students.
The usual range of course offerings like Construction, Careers in Education, Maritime, Medical Careers, and many more will be available.
In-person classroom and remote courses will be offered from July 6 to July 30, and other courses, such as “Sailing the Salish Sea” aboard the schooner, Adventuress, and at the Center for Wooden Boats will be offered at the end of June and beginning of August.

Jazzed Virtual Summer Playbook |
In JazzED's virtual summer camp, PLAYBOOK, you’ll learn a new jazz standard or melody each week. You’ll get tips and tricks to better memorize songs and pointers on performing more expressive solos. You’ll learn to practice with a backing track. Each week the JazzED teacher will explain the history of the song and walk you through the most important recordings of it.

The boys lacrosse team is 3-2 after losing to crosstown rival Roosevelt in a Friday night lights showdown 7-4. On Saturday, May 8, they beat Redmond High School 8-7 in a very exciting nail-biter. Go Beavs!

The wrestling team hosted and topped Cleveland, Garfield, Roosevelt and West Seattle last Tuesday.

The Varsity Tennis teams split matches Tuesday, with the boys team beating O'Dea 4-1 while Holy Names Academy topped the girls team 5-0. |

Boys Varsity Basketball hosted Roosevelt Friday, with the Riders topping the Beavers 51-35.
On Wednesday, the team travels to the SWAC to take on Chief Sealth at 7:30 p.m. On Friday, Varsity hosts Ingraham at home at 7:30 p.m.

The Boys Swim and Dive team are grateful to be back in the pool! Though numbers are down from 45 boys last year to 15 participants this year, they are working hard and being flexible with this strange season.
They won their first dual meet against Ingraham last week ... by two points! Way to go Beaver Swim and Dive!

This week, the Varsity Girls Lacrosse team got their first win of the season, inching out NSI (Newport Sammamish Issaquah) 10-8. Great play all around by the Beavers, coming off of a tough week against Seattle Prep and Lakeside.
Our JV team played a strong game against Roosevelt, where they were challenged out in the midfield and met with a strong Riders goalie. The team played the entire game, with some girls scoring their first goals of the season in the 8-3 loss. The Girls Lacrosse program is hosting a double header on Monday, May 17, with JV playing Mercer Island at 6:45 p.m. and Varsity playing Bishop Blanchet at 8:15 p.m.

The boys soccer teams dropped games to Lincoln Thursday, with Varsity losing 2-0 on the road, while JV lost 2-1 at home.
The Freshman team lost to Lincoln 4-0 at Lower Woodland Friday, while JV beat Cleveland High School 6-0
At 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 20 Varsity will host crosstown rival Roosevelt.

The Ballard Varsity Baseball squad split its games last week, losing to Lakeside 2-0 Monday and topping Garfield 2-1 Thursday. The squad is 2-5 on the season.
JV bats came alive at home against Lakeside 21-4 Monday. The squad is 5-2 on the season. The Frosh team put up five runs in its 11-5 loss to Lincoln Thursday. Go Beavers Baseball!

The Ballard Girls Basketball teams took care of Lakeside last week, with the JV team topping the Lions 66-41 at home Monday and Varsity winning 54-37 away on Tuesday.
The team also beat rival Roosevelt Friday 38-31 in the Dam.

Ballard’s Track & Field competed Thursday against Bishop Blanchet, Nathan Hale and West Seattle at the Nathan Hale Track.
Beaver highlights: Liane Kistler topped in Pole Vault (13-00.00); Eric Souza-Ponce won the 3200m (9:52.29a); Peter Golden dominated discus (119-00); Tova Goedert won the 33" 100m Hurdles (18.37a); the relay team of Anna Simpson, Ryan Murphy, Ella Tipping and Jill Sousley won the 4x200m (1.54.50a); Sophie Carolyn Pratt tied a West Seattle athlete for first in the High Jump (4-08.00); and Kat Moen topped in Triple Jump (31-02.00).

The Ballard High Sail Team competed in the NW District Fleet Racing Championships in Bellingham this past week-end against teams across Western Washington and Northern Oregon.
They placed 2nd and have qualified for the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA) Mallory Doublehanded National Championship to be held in Cleveland, Ohio in June 2021.
The team is super excited for this opportunity.
