"Construction Connection" is your source for monthly information on industry news and events to keep you in the know. BIA-Hawaii is The VOICE of the construction industry and we work diligently to promote our members through advocacy and education and provide community outreach programs to enhance the quality of life for the people of Hawaii.
Message from BIA-Hawaii's CEO
BIA is working hard for you – our members. We held our first ever series of five industry focused webinars and I want to reflect on where we are today and take a look at what we’ve accomplished together over the past few months.

With rising COVID cases in the islands, we need to stay focused and have protocols in place. Here are some resources BIA has to empower you and to strengthen your business.

The BIA webinar series provided some great tools to handle the everyday burdens that COVID has presented: best practices HR toolkits, sanitation and related procedures, and the knowledge that NAHB and BIA, with YOU, were instrumental in ensuring that the building industry remained ‘essential’ throughout this pandemic.

You also have OSHA reporting requirements and guides, our weekly COVID-19 newsletter and our COVID-19 page on the BIA website. We will continue to blast these tools out to keep you informed.

In addition, we have ramped up our education offerings as the CTC Building is now open for business. We recently held a 40-hr Safety class and we will hold another again in August. We will hold our Construction Quality Management class in July, Construction Safety and Injury Prevention, AND our incredible YOUTHBUILD PACT program will run from September to October.

We will host these great courses and more online in the coming months. This is a fantastic opportunity to make the most of your time and get the Certified Aging in Place designation under your belt. Basics of Building will be held in October - if you know anyone who is considering a career change or is curious about the industry, send them our way. We know there are many people in transition now who will be looking to try something new, so this can be a good thing, and it’s exciting! Classes in Estimation, Scheduling, and Project Management will also be held in October – and nearly all the classes just mentioned can help you and your staff get some letters after your name. We certainly want to position our members as industry professionals, so we hope to see your company name pop up several times in our registration queue.

Visit www.biahawaii.org/upcoming-courses for a list of all of the upcoming education programs, or you can always contact our office for clarification on what might be most suitable for professional development next steps for you or your team.

Member Spotlight
Members Share COVID Lessons Learned

BIA will spotlight and share member's experiences in an effort to help each other in these unprecedented times.

This month we visit with Chris Bennett of Riggs Distributing, the local distributor for Sub-Zero, Wolf and Cove appliances. As a second-generation family owned and operated business, Sub-Zero continues to innovate and bring new products to the market. This innovation would not be possible without the valuable feedback from the architect and design community.

Riggs Distributing, along with the rest of the industry, was considered essential during the early stage of the pandemic. Out of necessity, they worked remotely and adapted to the Zoom culture.
Riggs and Sub-Zero invested in web-based trainings and virtual showrooms, which allow for virtual consultations with their customers.

Riggs experienced an interesting business reaction with their retail and developer clients - sales picked up as clients worried about global supply chain disruptions. Their products are manufactured in the United States, and as a result, sales actually increased as they were able to avoid global disruptions.

No doubt, the next few months will continue to bring new challenges, but with innovation and tenacity, Riggs will continue to adapt to the challenges faced by the industry and their sector.

For more information on the product lines carried by Riggs Distributing, visit www.riggsdistributing.com
