A Maryland woman is still recovering from a brain injury after nearly 30 years. But she's using her battle to inspire others to keep fighting.
Brain injuries affect nearly 1.5 million Americans every year, experts say. Many suffer in silence and succumb to depression and anxiety.

Adrienne Walker-Pittman strives to win that battle every day. She suffered traumatic injuries after an accident in January 1996.

"All of that part of my life is kind of a fog to me. And I don't know if that's my brain saying, 'This was a bad time and you don't need to remember this,' or if it's part of the brain injury blocking stuff out," she said.

But her daily routine brings her back.

"Every morning I put my prosthetic leg on, and that's a reminder of what happened to me, but I thank God that I'm still here," she said.

KEY POINTS
  • Sugar is one of the most common ingredients in the modern U.S. diet.
  • The more sugar a person eats, the more sweet-tolerant they become.
  • The potent brain effects of sugar help explain the modern sugar obsession and frequent difficulties moderating sugar consumption.

Sugar is the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of the nutrition world. Pleasure and poison, desire and danger, love and Lucifer; sugar somehow embodies all these qualities and more in our modern culture. Part sweet-tasting nutrient (sugar is a source of carbohydrates, one of the three major macronutrients along with fat and protein) and part mind-altering substance, sugar began taking Western civilization by storm in the 18th century. By the 21st century, sugar's candied conquest of the U.S. was complete, appearing as an additive in two-thirds to three-fourths of all food and drinks1.

While most recent media attention to sugar focuses on potential health harms and ways to reduce sugar intake, neuroscientific research about sugar has revealed how and why this plain white substance wields so much power in our lives.

Times of Perseverance: Hope and Healing on the Battlefields of Life is a gripping narrative chronicling a Jewish man's tenacious survival from personal and family traumatic brain injury, while capturing a transparent glimpse into the soul of a wounded man. His brother's severe traumatic brain injury reveals that God leads a person to himself in times of tragedy. Moreover, his near-death experience which was a result of human error teaches about God's forgiveness from Scripture. This is not only a story of a Jewish man coming to faith in Jesus Christ and his theological progression to becoming a Messianic Jew. Rather, it encapsulates a genuine, longitudinal account of overcoming life adversity and grief while providing hope, encouragement, and inspiration to the wounded of society.

1) Quote We are Contemplating
“They say a person needs just three things to be truly happy in this world: someone to love, something to do, and something to hope for.”
