JUNE IS NATIONAL GUN VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

Every day, more than 300 people are directly impacted by gun violence in the United States. Gun Violence Awareness Month was created to draw attention to this tragic reality and demand life-saving change.
We Wear Orange in honor of Hadiya Pendleton and all those impacted by gun violence.

Hadiya Pendleton was 15 years old when she was shot and killed in Chicago in 2013. Just one week earlier, Hadiya had performed with her high school majorette squad at President Obama's second inaugural parade. In response to her death, Hadiya's friends asked others to wear orange to raise awareness about gun violence.

Gun violence prevention advocates and organizations nationwide have taken up the color orange as the color of gun violence awareness and the first Friday in June is now considered National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Patients with a certain type of brain tumor could soon be treated with an oral targeted drug instead of undergoing more toxic chemotherapy and radiation, say researchers reporting new results that could potentially change the treatment landscape.

The investigational drug vorasidenib (Servier) is awaiting approval for use in gliomas bearing mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 and 2 (IDH1, IDH2).

Results from the pivotal phase 3 INDIGO trial show that the drug was associated with a significant delay in time to disease progression when compared with placebo.

The median progression-free survival (PFS) was 27.7 months for patients on vorasidenib, compared with 11.1 months for patients assigned to placebo (hazard ratio (HR) for progression or death with vorasidenib of 0.39 (P < .0001).

Vorasidenib was also associated with significantly longer time to the next treatment, and patients generally tolerated the drug well, reported first author Ingo K. Mellinghoff, MD, from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York City.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vertigo. A study reported that the lifetime prevalence rate of BPPV is 2.4% [1]. Idiopathic BPPV is more prevalent in older adults than in younger adults, with a peak onset between 50 and 60 years. It is also more prevalent in females than males, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:2–1:3. The typical symptom of BPPV is recurrent episodes of vertigo lasting for ≤1 min provoked by head movement. While each episode is brief, vertigo typically recurs in weeks without therapy [2] and is thought to be caused by the displacement of otoliths from otolithic organs into the semicircular canals [3,4]. However, the cause of the otolith displacement remains unknown. The Dix–Hallpike maneuver and head-roll test induce nystagmus in patients with suspected BPPV. After a clinical diagnosis of BPPV, Epley’s canalith-repositioning maneuver is used to treat patients immediately.

Migraine is the second most prevalent neurologic disorder, with a male-to-female ratio of 1:3 [5]. The 1-year prevalence rate of migraine was reported to be 9.1% in Taiwan [6]. The prevalence of migraine in males is highest in the age range of 25–29 years (8.3%), whereas it is highest in females in the age range of 30–34 years (21.1%). Most migraine diagnoses are made clinically according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders, 2nd Edition, 2004 [7]. With core symptoms and adequate follow-up time, a clinical diagnosis of migraine is primarily made in an outpatient setting. However, physicians should consider secondary headache disorder if the onset of migraine is noted after the age of 50 years [5,7]. Migraine is now a manageable disease entity with much evidence supporting preventive and abortive treatments [8]. Among the various subtypes of migraine, vestibular migraine introduced in the International Classification of Headache Disorders appendix, 3rd Edition, stands out with its presentation of vestibular symptoms lasting between 5 min and 72 h [9]. The duration of vestibular migraine symptoms is longer than that of BPPV [10,11]. Characteristic features of migrainous positional vertigo include short duration, frequent recurrence, onset in early life, migrainous symptoms during episodes of positional vertigo, and atypical positional nystagmus [11,12,13,14,15]. However, the vestibular migraine criteria are for research purposes, and better scientific evidence is warranted before vestibular migraine can be formally accepted

Weaving together American history, dramatic family chronicle, and searing episodes of memoir, Annette Gordon-Reed’s On Juneteenth provides a historian’s view of the country’s long road to Juneteenth, recounting both its origins in Texas and the enormous hardships that African-Americans have endured in the century since, from Reconstruction through Jim Crow and beyond. All too aware of the stories of cowboys, ranchers, and oilmen that have long dominated the lore of the Lone Star State, Gordon-Reed―herself a Texas native and the descendant of enslaved people brought to Texas as early as the 1820s―forges a new and profoundly truthful narrative of her home state, with implications for us all.
