He was instrumental in managing our internal operations, ensuring smooth day-to-day activities, and supporting the development of key initiatives that have helped countless businesses thrive.
We are incredibly grateful for Mike's dedication, leadership, and tireless efforts. NYU Urban Future Labs Turns 15!!! | |
Last week, we celebrated 15 years of NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s Future Labs featuring several speakers who extolled the impact the network has had on the city. Among them was Tandon’s Vice Dean for Research, Linda Ng Boyle, who said:
“Since 2009, the Future Labs have supported startups in many sectors that include AI, emerging media, clean energy, and more recently, the offshore wind innovation hub. They have provided guidance, expertise, resources, and a community of like-minded people ... I am looking forward to not just 15 more years, but 50 more!”
Since 2009, the Future Labs have supported over 400 startups, with an impressive 93% success rate, and have helped raise $4.6 billion while creating nearly 10,000 jobs.

Game Design Future Lab Applications

Operated within NYU Tandon Future Labs, the Game Design Future Lab (GDFL) focuses on digital game design, development, infrastructure for games, and emerging media, with the aims of increasing video game production in NYC, business growth for indie studios, and supporting NYC entrepreneurs and digital game developers moving forward.
GDFL offers a one-year, in-person program designed to help digital gaming startups reach their goals by providing desk space, in-person staff support, academic and industry mentorship, networking opportunities, investor guidance, tailored workshops, and office hours. The first year's cohort will consist of at least six game developers or startups.

Zero Irving Workforce Development Project Fund RFP
(Due January 15, 2025)
The Community Advisory Board for Zero Irving recently released a Workforce Development Project Fund RFP. The RFP seeks proposals for workforce development initiatives in connection with Civic Hall. The Fund is endowed with $200,000 annually, and the RFP seeks proposals that prioritize pathways for individuals to reach economic security and mobility through career pathways. Submissions are due by January 15, 2025.

The Student Track of this competition offers more than $400,000 in cash prizes to multidisciplinary teams that identifyhigh-potential energy technologies and pitch their strategies for commercialization, plus the opportunity to gain valuable entrepreneurial skills. The Faculty Track offers more than $100,000 in cash prizes to individuals and teams for the successful development and implementation of educational activities that engage students on energy technology commercialization and entrepreneurship topics at their institution. Westchester Life Sciences Ecosystem Shines at WCBA,
Builds Bio+ Event

On December 3, industry leaders, innovators, and professionals came together at the BioInc@NYMC Biotechnology Incubator to celebrate Westchester County as a hub for life sciences innovation and growth. Hosted by Westchester County, the Westchester County Biosciences Accelerator (WCBA), and Builds Bio+, the event featured representatives from WMCHealth, Laronix, Quadrus Medical Technologies, Cognition Therapeutics, BJH Advisors LLC and the WCBA.
Deborah Novick, Westchester County’s director of entrepreneurship and innovation, explained how 160 life science companies in the county have generated $20 billion in economic activity over the past 10 years.
“Right here in Westchester, we have 20 percent of the private sector life sciences workforce in the state,” she said during the event. “We’re working very hard to help nurture more entities.”

Latest info on Tech Hubs Funding and CHIPS Funding

The National Defense Authorization Act includes up to $500M for the Tech Hubs program
U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and key architect of the CHIPS and Science Law, secured up to $500 million in federal investments to preserve and expand the Regional Tech Hubs (Tech Hubs) program. Sen. Cantwell secured the funding as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which is set to pass before the end of the year. SSTI helped lead a coalition that advocated for the provision and additional funding for Tech Hubs. Read more
U.S. Department of Commerce announces multiple CHIPS and Science Act Awards at year’s end
FYI This Week, a science policy newsletter from the American Institute of Physics, reported in their November 25 article Commerce aims to commit CHIPS money before Trump returns that “Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said … she is trying to allocate all the semiconductor manufacturing and research funds appropriated by the CHIPS and Science Act before President Joe Biden leaves office." Bipartisan legislation will modernize the EDA and other regional commissions whose mission is to spur economic growth in communities across the country
Washington—The U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) celebrates its historic reauthorization by Congress, allowing it to continue its legacy of promoting American innovation and competitiveness by providing grants and support to communities across the country. Since 1965, EDA has led some of the nation’s most impactful programs to strengthen public works and infrastructure, job creation and workforce development, disaster recovery, and technology and industry advancement. EDA has not been formally reauthorized since 2004.

Empire State Development (ESD) anticipates designating ten Centers for Advanced Technology (CAT or “Center”) under this RFP. The CAT program is designed to spur technology-based applied research and economic growth in New York; encourage applied research collaboration and innovation with industry; promote workforce development; better leverage State funds with investments from the federal government, industry, foundations and not-for-profit economic development organizations; and increase the competitiveness of New York State companies over the Center’s ten-year designation period.
