Mike Balsamo,
CEO of BIASC
A Message from CEO, Mike Balsamo

The annual Building Industry Show successfully gathered over 1,500 attendees at the Riverside Convention Center on November 9th and 10th to engage in important discussions during our first ever Pop-Up Education sessions. BIASC members and other building industry professionals were able to walk the exhibitor floor, catch up with colleagues, and "Start the Conversation" that tackled issues relevant to the industry. Our Regional Installation Program capped off the show in very positive fashion. We acknowledged our member volunteers of the year from across the Association and also celebrated Tom Grable from TriPointe Homes as 2016 Builder of the Year!

Peter Vanek from Meritage Homes is now installed as your 2017 President for BIA Southern California. Peter's theme for the year is "A future Built through Collaboration." I would like to express my personal thanks to our now Past President Michael Battaglia from CalAtlantic Homes. Michael has served our Association admirably for the past two years. He handled a number of organizational issues very carefully for our Association and he also advocated for us in Sacramento and Washington D.C. He stepped up to the plate in every way possible.

The passing of Proposition 51, which provides a $9 billion bond to help finance a statewide program of school construction projects, will provide schools with the much-needed repairs each year. On behalf of our 1100 plus members of BIA of Southern California, we would like to express congratulations to our political team at CBIA for this huge victory. Our entire political team at BIASC and the Chapters was also extremely successful in the local elections and achieved a 79% win rate for our supported candidates.

On the research front, according to the latest McKinsey Global Institute report California would still have to construct 3.5 million homes by 2025 to relieve the housing shortage gap. To help support our industry and our efforts I encourage our association's members to come together and participate in BIA's governmental affairs efforts.

In Chapter news, the BIA Orange County Chapter has just held a wonderful Installation Gala celebrating the incoming Chapter President, Phil Bodem from Taylor Morrison, at the Ritz Carlton in Dana Point. I am also pleased to share that the Riverside Chapter installed Jeff Clemens of Lennar Homes as their 2017 President at a great ceremony at the Mission Inn.

As November comes to a close we ask that you join the BIA Los Angeles/Ventura Chapter for their Awards & Installation Gala on December 6th, 2016 at the Skirball Cultural Center. BIA Riverside Chapter is having their Annual Holiday LAC Luncheon Wednesday December 7 at the Riverside Convention Center to honor the Outgoing President, Leonard Miller with Richmond American. BIA Baldy View is also having an Annual Holiday Charity Gala on December 8, 2016 at the Sheraton Fairplex Conference Center.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

BIASC's 2016 Building Industry Show Focuses on Education and Culminates by Thanking its Leadership and Members
The Building Industry Show (BIS), which was on Wednesday, November 9 and Thursday November 10 at the Riverside Convention Center by the Building Industry Association of Southern California, Inc. (BIASC), "Started the Conversation" by turning its focus towards education.

More than 1,500 attendees came to this year's show not just to mingle with builders, catch up with professionals in the building industry, and discuss new job prospects, but to also participate in the show's new format that sought to engage attendees with informative discussions.

TRI Pointe Homes Honored with Building Industry Association of Southern California's Builder of The Year Award

TRI Pointe Homes Southern California, a leader in the design, construction, and sales of innovative single-family homes, announced today that Division President Tom Grable has been named Builder of the Year by the esteemed Building Industry Association of Southern California (BIASC). The award recognizes outstanding members of the profession each year and is the highest honor bestowed by the BIASC based on leadership within the industry, dedication to community service, and commitment to building quality homes.

Through his fundraising efforts on behalf of the BIASC Political Action Committee (BIASC PAC) and integral role in the local political process, Grable's mission has been to engage with and involve other homebuilders, their trade contractors and design and professional associates with the BIASC PAC to drive even more participation.

Apple Teams Up with BIASC Builders to Promote Smart Home Technology
As iPhone sales growth slows, Apple is teaming up with a handful of builders and using these kinds of test beds to inch its way into the market for Internet-connected home furnishings, a nascent field that has attracted rivals like Alphabet Inc.'s Google and Amazon.com.

The gamble is that pricey wireless home devices will be an easier sell when bundled into the home itself. Builders market granite countertops and brushed-nickel fixtures at thousands of models homes across the U.S. Why not video doorbells? Unlike Google and Amazon, however, Apple isn't hawking hardware meant to connect the home.

Instead, the HomeKit app could increase the value of its iOS ecosystem -- and make it tougher for users to switch to Android phones and tablets.
