Message from the Nulsen Family
Executive Director
If the first two months of this year are any indication, 2023 will certainly be an exciting year for BIFE.
We welcomed over 200 students, alumni, faculty, staff, and others in the Babson community to our first event this year, a Live Case Study and Cognac Tasting with Cyril Camus '91, President of Camus Cognac. In fact, the demand was so overwhelming that we had to move to a larger venue for the event!
Our other marquee event this semester, open only to students, is the Transformational Family Business Leadership Workshop with Carlos (Charly) Rojas Aboumrad MBA'11, CEO of Grupo Rotoplas. I'm thrilled to say that it was sold out within the first week of registration.
On the research front, Babson faculty continue to work on ground-breaking family entrepreneurship research . Our Faculty Director for Research and Bertarelli Foundation Distinguished Professor of Family Entrepreneurship William B. Gartner had a new article published in Family Business Review on the significance and use of "generation" in family businesses. Candida Brush, F.W. Olin Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship, recently released a book on women’s entrepreneurship and role in family businesses.
Lastly, I am thrilled to announce that the founding families cohort of Babson's Global Family Entrepreneurship Network is oversubscribed. This fabulous group of leading families representing nearly every continent is co-creating Babson's unique Network for curated learning, curated connectivity and curated experiences. We are grateful for the support of our founding families in launching this unique initiative.
We've begun planning for our events and programs for the next academic year, when we will celebrate the 5th anniversary of our Institute. I can't wait to tell you more about what we have in store. But for now, please read on to find out more about the stories I have highlighted here.
Sincerely,

Update on the Babson Global Family Entrepreneurship Network: Founding Families
We're thrilled to announce that the Babson Global Family Entrepreneurship Network now has a founding families cohort. Our founding members hail from Europe, Asia, the Middle East, South America, Central America, and the USA and have businesses in a wide range of industries including logistics, food and beverage, private equity, banking, healthcare, spirits, energy, packaging, utilities, and technology. About half of our members are parents of current Babson students.
The Babson Global Family Entrepreneurship Network will amplify the capacity of entrepreneurial families from around the world to create value together, built on a foundation of stronger family relationships through curated learning, curated connectivity, and curated experiences.
The Network's Founding Families will co-create the design of the Community, advise the Institute team in the implementation process, and provide critical financial support for building a successful Network. Their valuable input, expertise, and shared experience will influence how we move forward.
If you'd like to learn more about the Babson Global Family Entrepreneurship Network, please reach out to us!

Thought Leadership: Talking About (My) Generation: The Use of Generation as Rhetorical History in Family Business
Co-authored by Bertarelli Foundation Distinguished Professor of Family Entrepreneurship William B. Gartner and Professor Christina Lubinski at the Copenhagen Business School, the newly released article* explores two research questions:
- How does a history-informed approach uncover how the word “generation” is used in family narratives to talk about themselves and foreground either the family or its embeddedness in society?
- How do actors in family business strategically use “generation” to convey and legitimize their vision for the future?
Using a constitutive history approach to archival materials from the German printing and publishing business Bagel, a seventh-generation family firm, we identify four usages of “generation” by which these narratives can establish continuity or change in how families talk about themselves and foreground either the family or its embeddedness in society.

Thought Leadership:
New Book on Family Impact on Women Entrepreneurship
Women, Family, and Family Businesses Across Entrepreneurial Contexts, a new book edited by F.W. Olin Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship Candida Brush, is a collection of papers presented at the 2021 Diana International Conference in Nice, France (conference held online). There is extensive work that examines all aspects of family leadership succession, business and family governance, innovation, internationalization, the role of siblings, corporate entrepreneurship, etc. But less often is the role of women considered in family businesses.
This book provides an overview of the state of the art on the respective family impact on women entrepreneurship and women’s place in family businesses and identifies research gaps in both areas. In one respect, we also consider how these two streams of literature can inform each other. Overall, most papers suggest women are still serving traditional roles within family businesses and still find it difficult to establish their place in family businesses. Women pursuing entrepreneurial goals also face challenges with child care and in gaining their spouses' support for their entrepreneurial activities. However, with a heightened understanding of the challenges, we begin to also identify opportunities for progress and new research possibilities to expand women’s roles and successes in both areas.
