Yesterday, on September 17th, ASD staff, board, stakeholders, and the Wellspring Foundation SWVA gathered on the land that will soon be ASD’s Agricultural Campus in Washington County, Virginia. The occasion was joyous as we had the honor of accepting a $2.25 million dollar grant award from the Wellspring Foundation to help us complete necessary site prep and begin construction on ASD’s much-needed second food hub.
Our CEO Kathlyn Terry Baker opened the celebration with a warm welcome and gratitude for this incredibly generous donation. She explained that we are doing this project in three phases, the first phase is building a new food hub, which is what this grant will go towards. We will still continue operating our Appalachian Harvest Food Hub in Duffield, but this second location will create new jobs and expand our reach for food boxes in our region.
ASD board chair, Ben Casteel followed, explaining how farmers in Appalachia are part of the cultural fabric of our incredible region. Finally, Sean McMurray, Executive Director of the Wellspring Foundation, shared how ASD’s goals align with Wellspring’s goals. He added his hopes for a better future. After closing the ceremony, Kathlyn and Sean presented the check to the crowd with rounds of applause.
We are so excited to start building this campus. Thank you to the Wellspring Foundation and all our donors, from the past and in the future, for helping us build a stronger Appalachia through agriculture.
