Looking at the Greater Plaza Saltillo Area
Capital Metro Transportation Authority's plans to redevelop the Plaza Saltillo area have sparked a lot of interest from public officials to development teams to advocates who want to protect the cultural significance of the area.
Here is a look at what makes the area so unique. Plaza Saltillo was first built in 1998 as a result of a collaborative effort between the City of Austin, the City of Saltillo (Austin's sister city), Capital Metro and Ole Mexico, an east Austin cultural group. In 2010, part of the plaza complex became the Plaza Saltillo station along the Capital MetroRail commuter rail line. It is the second to last stop along the line which terminates in downtown. Hermann Park Breaks Ground on Single Largest Improvement Project
A veritable "who's who" of Houston joined Mayor Annise Parker in Hermann Park midday Wednesday to celebrate a very special occasion - the groundbreaking of the final project in the Park's Master Plan, the $30 million McGovern Centennial Gardens and Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion. The largest capital improvement project undertaken by the Park, McGovern Centennial Gardens will transform the existing 15-acre Garden Center and surrounding grounds into a public garden unique in Houston. Features will include a rose garden, celebration garden, woodland garden, international sculpture promenade and interactive family garden to teach children about growing fruits, vegetables and herbs.
The centerpiece of the Gardens will be a football-field length great lawn, crowned by the Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion as the entry. Ribbon cutting is scheduled for Fall 2014.Read more here.

The MoPac Makeover
If there's one thing Austin residents can all agree on, it's that our transportation problem is now a crisis. Regardless of when a resident moved to the greater Austin area, the issue largely remains everyone's number one concern. City, county, and regional authorities continue to explore how to provide congestion relief, but to date, we are making some progress but still spinning our wheels.
There is at least one silver lining to the dark cloud, and it starts with a number of changes to MoPac. These are important and substantial modifications that should provide Austinites traveling the City's main western artery some relief, and most importantly construction for these changes will begin this fall.

American Society of Civil Engineers (San Antonio Chapter) and BIG RED DOG
Here at BIG RED DOG, we encourage our team members to get out in the community, help others, and make a difference. But it's all just talk unless our people actually go out and do it. In one such instance, our teammates Amanda Saldivar and Steve Lin have been working with the San Antonio chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) to impact local students and the community for the better.
