Earlier this week, the Clinical Trials Fund was officially launched, supported by a Budget 2021 investment of $250 million over three years for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. This launch reinforces and strengthens the clinical trials ecosystem in Canada, and will help support the training of new clinical researchers. Additionally, a new Northern Centre for Clinical Research in collaboration with the UBC Faculty of Medicine, the University of Northern British Columbia and Northern Health, is being launched to create more opportunities for clinical and biomedical research, and to improve care, in Northern BC.
As one of our province’s fastest growing sectors, life sciences plays a crucial role in driving growth not only for our provincial economy and health care system, but also nationally and globally. This is why we are so pleased to see organizations like Michael Smith Health Research BC behind resources like REACH BC to help propel health research and outcomes forward. This publicly funded online platform connects researchers and academics with members of the public/ patients who want to take part in the numerous studies taking place across the province. We encourage you to learn more about this fantastic resource today!
We also want to highlight an exciting opportunity from the National Research Council of Canada, who put out a call for a co-founder to jointly establish a not-for-profit corporation to govern the Biologics Manufacturing Centre. This is a great chance for an organization with the right entrepreneurial drive to operate a brand new, end-to-end biomanufacturing facility, and to help shape the future of this important asset for Canada. A virtual information session will be held on July 6th, and applications will be accepted until August 1st.
Big news from Pfizer Canada and BioNTech who have filed a Supplemental New Drug Submission with Health Canada for use of COMIRNATY, a vaccine to help prevent COVID-19 in children six months to under five years of age. Also, Bold Therapeutics announced that its BOLD-100 early mCRC data would be showcased at 2022 Metals in Medicine Gordon Research Conference.
People on the Move
We’d like to congratulate some people who have started in new roles: Zymeworks appointed Dr. Paul Moore as their Chief Scientific Officer and Jacek Mis joined HTuO Biosciences as their Director of Business Development.
Awards
There are so many exciting developments and innovations happening within our sector each and every week. At LSBC, it is truly our privilege to help support, promote, and represent this amazing community across the province.
Wishing everyone a safe and happy long weekend!
Until next week,
Wendy and the LSBC team

New Genome BC Project Uses Remote Sensing Technologies to Identify Trees Resistant to Climate Extremes
Increasingly severe heat and drought are weakening the health of BC’s forests. The growing season for trees is expanding, increasing exposure to frost as well as drought. This change results in significant damage, causing plantation reforestation to fail and decreasing the value of the harvested timber. One solution is to plant more resilient trees, however, identifying which tree species are resilient enough is a challenge... READ MORE
