This week, we focused much of our attention on Vancouver Island! We were thrilled to have been part of the exciting provincial announcement of a $2.5M investment for Vancouver Island Life Sciences (VILS) to build a new wet lab facility in Greater Victoria. This lab will provide affordable, specialized lab space for up to six local early-stage companies annually, enabling them to accelerate their progress in improving health outcomes, pandemic preparedness, and technology commercialization. Distinguished speakers included The Honourable Brenda Bailey, Minister of Jobs, Economic Development and Innovation (JEDI), Scott Phillips of StarFish Medical, Sam Mercer of VILS, and Stephanie Willerth from Axolotl Biosciences. We couldn't be more thrilled by this significant investment in the future of our industry. Learn more.
While on the island, we hosted a series of roundtables to hear from members about their key priorities, projects, and opportunities for advancement. We were also fortunate to receive a tour of the new BioInnovation Hub led by Sam Mercer, President of VILS, followed by a meeting with the VILS Board to share updates between our organizations. We also had a productive meeting with Krista Allan, VP of Quality Research at Island Health to explore potential collaboration.
A highlight of the trip was an inspiring tour of the University of Victoria’s Biomechanics and Instrumentation Lab led by Director Dr. Christopher Dennison and the Laboratory for Innovations in Microengineering (LiME) led by Dr. Mohsen Akbari. A big thanks to the Uvic team, which also included Dr. Amir Seyfoori of Apricell Biotechnology, graduate student Aaron Brice, and Innovation Manager Lindsay Frehlick, for making this tour possible and sharing their knowledge with us.
We wrapped up our Island sojourn with our at-capacity BC Showcase Series: Vancouver Island event, where attendees learned about the latest research and innovation in the region from an esteemed group of sector leaders, including The Honourable Brenda Bailey, Minister of JEDI. Thanks to all our inspiring speakers, including Dr. Cheryl Heykoop from Royal Road University, Dr. Fraser Hof from the University of Victoria, Sam Mercer from Vancouver Island Life Sciences, Scott Phillips from StarFish Medical, Dr. Brock Schuman from Azor Biotek, Sharan Sidhu from Numinus, Dr. Kevin Vos from VoxCell BioInnovation, and Dr. Danielle Lavallee of Michael Smith Health Research BC.
