A Video Message from Marty Huitt, BIST Director

As we approach winter break, we want to take a moment to revisit our three equalizers: early intervention, common language, and processing. These are three critical components for our adult community to continue to work towards consistency with students.

You may not have a lot of time to have conversations about this at this point in the school year, but as we approach a new calendar year, we encourage you to make it a top priority for conversation at the adult level.

Thank you for all your hard work so far this year. Have a great holiday break!

Early Intervention Tips

  • Early Intervention is critical to everything else we do in our school.

  • Ensure that all staff clearly understands “One redirect, then take action.” Action does not always equal a Safe Seat.

  • Are we as a staff committed to intervening early on?

  • Reinsert why the Safe Seat is not a punishment. "I’m moving you to a Safe Seat to increase your chances of making good choices for yourself and increase self-control."

Common Language Tips

  • Common language increases predictability, helping students trust adults more quickly.

  • Are we as a staff on the same page with student expectations?

  • Do we all commit to being visible, aware, and intervening with students in common areas?

  • What will we say/do when students are not meeting expectations?

  • When I sound like your teacher, even though you may not know me, it’s easier to trust me.

Processing Tips

  • Processing builds partnerships and holds students accountable.

  • Are all staff members committed to processing with students?

  • Remember that processing is not a kind lecture.

  • Ask questions to keep students engaged and focus on their behavior, not the teacher’s emotions.

  • Processing creates a coaching environment and allows kids to change.

  • Focus on reconnecting the relationship – holding you verbally accountable, and coaching into a new skill.
