Synagogue Restoration Update

The restoration of the Old Synagogue in Bardejov’s Jewish Suburbia is progressing rapidly. Thanks to the generous EEA & Norway Grants and UZZNO, we expect the synagogue building to be completely restored by the end of April 2017. The photo below, taken from Mlynská Street, shows the most recent view of the exterior of the Synagogue.

After the restoration is complete, we plan to have our next gathering of ‘Bardejovers’ in Bardejov. The event will take place in the Spring or Summer of 2017. Similar to our previous gatherings in 2012 and 2014, we will include heritage tours in Bardejov and the region, lectures, meetings, Kosher food, local transportation, and our yearly Memorial event with the participation of the local community. We hope to announce the date of the event in our next Newsletter.

72nd Anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising

Our associates Pavol and Peter Hudák participated in the commemoration event in Bardejov for the 72nd anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNU) on August 24th. The Slovak National Uprising (marked yearly on August 29th) is considered the biggest armed Slovak insurrection against the Nazis during World War II. The ceremony commemorates those who took part in the Slovak resistance movement and fought against the Nazis and their allies. Participants included dozens of Bardejov citizens, members of the Bardejov Regional Branch of the Slovak Union of Anti-Fascist Fighters, former members of the SNU, and representatives of regional offices, agencies and unions, as well as City officials led by Mayor Hanuščak.
