Visit from the Ambassador of Israel in Slovakia
On the 14th of June, 2022, we had the honor to welcome His Excellency Eitan Levon, Ambassador of Israel in Slovakia, to the Jewish Suburbia and Holocaust Memorial. He was accompanied by his wife Mrs. Nava Levon and Honorary Consul Peter Frajt. Upon arrival, the delegation was welcomed and greeted at the Holocaust Memorial by Mayor of Bardejov, Mr. Boris Hanuščak, who made sure to meet His Excellency personally, and by David Mingelgrin, assistant to Bardejov Jewish Preservation Committee founder, Emil Fish, and Anna Hvizdova, representative of our non-profit organization in Bardejov. Pavol and Peter Hudak, local historians, led the tour of the Jewish sites and pointed out important aspects of the no longer existing Jewish community in Bardejov. His Excellency started the visit at the Holocaust Memorial followed by the Jewish Suburbia. The Ambassador and his wife were actively interested in the Jewish Suburbia, and were impressed by all the activities, restoration and history of the site. After meaningful conversation and exchanges during lunch, His Excellency moved to the Town Square where guide, Lucia, was awaiting the arrival of the delegation to complete the Heritage Tour of Bardejov, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site town.

Bardejov Family Spotlight
"The Móric Atlas and Jolana Deutsch Family"
Móric (Mikuláš) Atlas, a doctor, played an incredible role in Bardejov during the early stages of deportations. Moric Atlas was born in Raslavice. His wife, Jolana, was born in Zsujta, Hungary. Her sister, Rela, was married to Mórics’s brother, Adolf. Móric Atlas was the main doctor of Bardejovské Kúpele (Spa). He and Jolana lived on Poštová Street. According to several accounts, Móric conceived a plan with Refuel (Rudolf) Löwy, leader of Bardejov’s Jewish community, to delay the transportation of hundreds of young Jewish girls from Bardejov to Auschwitz in 1942. With the help of Refuel Löwy, they went to Kosice to find a typhus serum that simulated the effects of typhus. The plan was to administer the drug to the young girls of Bardejov. When the district physician confirmed the presence of typhus, they quarantined the area, preventing the girls to join the transport to Auschwitz. The Germans were ordered to stay out of areas that had disease, especially typhus. Rudolf Löwy was caught and transported to Auschwitz where he was tortured for all of his efforts to thwart the deportation and murder of Bardejover Jews. He died from his wounds in Auschwitz. As the local doctor, Móric was issued an exemption, and he and Jolana were not deported. They survived the war and moved to Jerusalem, where Móric died in 1982.
