75th Anniversary of Liberation

January 27th marked the 75th anniversary of Liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp in 1945.
In honor of this day, Mayor Boris Hanuscak visited the Holocaust Memorial along with Marcel Tribus, Director of Bardejov's Cultural Tourist Center, and other city officials in memory of the victims.
During the Holocaust Remembrance Day, Bardejov's Holocaust Memorial remained open until late evening to allow locals and visitors to come and pay their respects.
Below is a photo taken in Bardejov's Town Square in which the town drummer is announcing the end of World War II, as well as a photo of Mayor Hanuscak laying a bouquet inside the Memorial.

Our founder, Mr. Emil A. Fish, has been working on another publication for quite some time. It is a memoir of his life and experiences from the time of his childhood in Bardejov to his accomplishments in present day.
This book will be full of valuable information, and Mr. Fish is looking forward to sharing it with you once completed.

Plans for the restoration of the Beith Hamidrash building were displayed during our 2019 commemoration event.
We were not able to apply for the EEA Norwegian Grants for the restoration at this time, and currently we are looking for new options to proceed further.
We will keep you posted on the progress as soon as we have updates.

Mojžiš, a widower, was born in Horinchovo, Ukraine. He was a tanner and owner of a wholesale grocery and fur business. His daughters, Ida and Hana, were born in Zborov, and his sons, Abrahám and Dávid, were born in Bardejov. They lived together on Dlhý rad Street. The family was issued an exemption and was not deported, staying in Bardejov until 1943 when they left for Nitra, to be with the Nitra yeshiva. In 1944 they went into hiding. For seven months, Mr. Matuga, a Czech policeman who worked with the Nazis, hid them in an underground bunker on his own property. It was so small that they could not move or stand up. Mr. Matuga risked his life each day to bring them food. On March 30, 1945, Mojžiš and his family were liberated by the Russians. On May 15, 1945, they returned to Bardejov and lived once again in their home on Dlhý rad Street. Mojžiš remarried and between the years 1945 to 1951 the family immigrated to the United States and settled in Brooklyn, New York. In Brooklyn, Mojžiš once again had a grocery store. Each of his children married and there are a large number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
