Bardejov Committee Update:
by architect Giora Solar
1. With the main objective of moving faster with the restoration and creation of a museum in the Beith Midrash – meetings were held in Bardejov, during Sukkot.
The participants were the architects – Milo Olejar and Alena Petejova from Bardejov and Giora and Dror Solar from Israel, as well as consultants on wet infrastructure, electricity, safety, heating and ventilation and others. The project, though not fully developed yet, was presented to the consultants and they were asked to develop work plans as soon as possible. The objective is to have a cost estimate, as accurate as possible, and move ahead with fundraising and implementation.

2. The whole group was also shown the excavated old Mikvah, which awaits proper conservation and protection and finally, presentation to the public.
3. The main news comes from the 'modern' Mikvah, which was rented out for many years and used by a business for building and garden equipment and materials (previously the Old Synagogue and Beith Midrash were also used for the same purposes). The place has finally been vacated, cleaned and stands empty at the moment. The Mikvah is impressive and 'monumental', with deep 'pools', probably reaching ground water level. It is in very good shape, since it was in use by a business.
The meeting of the planners and consultants was called for the Beith Midrash, but everyone was very impressed and also expressed their thoughts regarding the Mikvah and the whole site.

Every issue, we pick a different family story from our Memorial Book to feature in the newsletter. We do this to continue honoring the memory of our Bardejov ancestors.

Family Story Spotlight
"The Henrik and Ester Schönfeld Family"
Henrik lived with his wife, Ester and their daughters, Terézia and Magda on Dlhý rad Street. Henrik, Ester and Magda had gone into hiding in Sereď using forged Aryan papers but they were betrayed. They were deported on July 10, 1942 to Žilina and later to Auschwitz where they perished—Henrik on July 31, 1942. Terézia had been in hiding at her grandmother’s and uncle’s farm until her grandmother was deported to Žilina. Terézia was taken with her uncle's family to the Novaky Labor camp where she remained until the gates were opened when the Russians were coming. She caught the final train to Banska Bystrica. After two months of working in a factory sewing Slovak uniforms, they fled to the lower Tatra mountains as the Germans advanced. Terézia hid in the mountains with others who cared for her throughout the winter of 1944-45 until the Russians liberated them in the Spring of 1945. Terézia returned to Bardejov from the mountains on April 11, 1945 and lived on Kláštorská Street. In 1947, Terézia’s uncles—her mother’s brothers— ook her to the United States where they immigrated. Terézia met and married Morris Isaac. They have one son, two daughters and seven grandchildren. Morris died in 2006. Terézia lives in New Jersey.
