Changes to the Bell Schedule for 2022 - 2023
For the 2022 - 2023 School Year Bishop Kelly is adopting a new dynamic bell schedule that we think will eliminate the need to update and change schedules during the school year. This color coded schedule will correspond with a calendar that shows the color for each week. Families can print the color coded calendar for at the beginning of the year, and simply check each week to see which color schedule we are using.

Color Coded Weeks:

RED WEEK - Standard Bell Schedule, similar to this year
ORANGE WEEK - A week where All School Mass falls on a Monday or Friday
YELLOW WEEK - A week where All School Mass falls on a Tuesday or Thursday
GREEN WEEK - A week where All School Mass falls on a Wednesday
BLUE WEEK - A week with no School on either a Friday or a Monday
INDIGO WEEK - A week with No School for one day mid-week
PURPLE WEEK - A week with a No School for some students for one or more days, but other students attend all week. (Example: Class Retreat or SAT Testing)
MAUVE WEEK - A week where schedules are adjusted so that students may opt to attend a State Tournament Competition
TEAL WEEK - A week with a special all school event (Example: Learnapalooza or Partner School Visitation Day)
GRAY WEEK - A week that is TBD in case we need some flexibility during a time when absences are high due to illness or school related travel
A Note from Rich and Mike
Dear BK Community,

Happy April Fool’s Day! We hope you had a restful and fun spring break and enjoyed your time with family and friends.

Prom Night
We are excited to be hosting a much more normal Junior/Senior Prom here at BK this Saturday night at the Dave and Patti Lachiondo Family Plaza. In 2020, due to COVID, we did not have prom and last year we were one of the few schools to have prom, but had a number of restrictions to gain CDH approval of our plan. Over 400 students have signed up for this year’s prom and it should be a very fun evening.

Mrs. Hutchinson, our Vice Principal for Student Affairs, wanted us to share this message with you, our parents:

“We wish to keep our kids as safe as possible and to avoid life-changing mistakes that can occur when alcohol and/or drug use happens on Prom Night. Our BK community must work together to make sure this evening is as safe as possible for our kids. Below are three tips that might help make prom night a little safer for everyone.

  • Tip #1. Have conversations about expectations all the time—not just at Prom time. If you haven’t already, this is a great time for you to start a regular habit. It is incredibly important that on a regular basis you talk with kids about your expectations about alcohol and drug use. It’s also important to speak with them about refusal skills, decision-making skills, what to do if they find themselves in a risky situation, the dangers of drinking and driving, and so on. It’s never too early to start talking about this with your kids. And it isn’t too late either. When prom and graduation time come around, please have a discussion about these things and make sure your plan and expectations for Prom Night, in particular, are especially clear.
  • Tip #2. Offer safe alternatives for the after-prom party. Some students are spending as much time thinking about their plans after prom as they are about the prom itself. I want to be clear - It is illegal to host a party at your home and allow underage drinking, even if you take everyone’s car keys. Additionally, this undermines other parents and Bishop Kelly. If you are willing and able, offer a fun, safe, alcohol-free party after the prom. Offering a chaperoned party after prom is a great way to make sure your child and others are safe on prom night. If you are going to be out of town on prom night, please make sure another trusted adult will be keeping tabs on your teenager. Leaving your teenager completely unchaperoned on prom night could mean that your child finds him or herself in a very difficult situation that they aren’t prepared to handle. Even if they have the best intentions.
  • Tip #3. Have a plan. Discuss with your teen what they should do if they find themselves in a difficult or dangerous situation. Who can they call for help or a ride if their date or group of friends is drinking? Is there a “safety phrase” your teenager can use to let you know they need you to come and get them? Do you have a set time that your son or daughter needs to check in or be home? Make a plan.

COVID-19 at BK
We had our first positive student cases (two) in three weeks over the break but both students are recovering and will be back on Monday. We had no positive cases among our faculty and staff in the month of March and the first day of April. Our attendance remained strong and there have been no issues with subs. External metrics around positivity rate (down below 2%), hospitalizations and ICU admits continue to drop, and Ada County is in the Low/Green community level for the third week in a row.

Final Thoughts
With the end of the school year less than two months away, we are grateful for all you (students, faculty/staff, and parents) have done to help us meet our 2021-22 school year objectives of strengthening a sense of belonging for each student, having each student achieve personal academic excellence, and strengthening the BK Way and a sense of community, school spirit and pride.

Thank you for your support, understanding, feedback, and trust.
God Bless!
