Bishop Kelly Faculty and Staff attended our annual Retreat today.
We celebrated Mass together at the Cathedral and then split into groups. One group did the Boise Urban Challenge in small teams, and the other group did a painting project with Father Bruno Segatta. Thank you for allowing us this time to grow in our faith, and build community!

A Message from Rich and Mike
Dear BK Parents,

We are now into October and it is finally starting to feel like fall. As we complete our fourth week of having all students and teachers on campus for in person learning, we are particularly grateful for our incredible teachers and staff. They have dealt with so many challenges these past nearly seven months and have continued to provide an exceptional learning experience for your sons and daughters. We say this because we have witnessed their dedication and commitment and because of the feedback our students and you, our parents, have given us.

As stated in our 9/30 Just in Time, cases are on the rise in our state and in the Treasure Valley. While we continue to have zero new cases since September 1st and have just five students in quarantine (BK COVID-19 numbers), we must stay vigilant because this will be a marathon, not a sprint, or even a 3200 meter race. We are very likely going to be battling COVID-19 in our communities through this entire school year and into the next school year. As a reminder, here are the three things you and your family can do to help us sustain the success we have had so far:
  • Remain vigilant on the 3 W’s - wear a mask, watch your distance, and wash your hands. We have noticed some students and some members of our community not fully covering their nose and mouth with their masks, students forgetting to wear their masks while outside after eating their lunch, and seeing both on campus and on social media poor examples of social distancing, and too many social gatherings that are greater than 10 people. On campus and at home, we must practice the 3 W’s for our school and for the greater Treasure Valley community!
  • Get your flu shots ASAP - we need all members of our community to get their flu vaccine without delay so we can achieve herd immunity from the flu while we continue to battle the coronavirus. This will decrease illnesses that cannot be readily distinguished from COVID- 19 and would therefore trigger extensive measures from the school and public health authorities. BK students may get their shots for free here at Bishop Kelly from our school nurse, MaryLou Cunningham, through the Saint Alphonsus School Health Program. Parents just need to fill out this consent form and have their student stop by the nurse’s office for their flu vaccine. In addition, all BK faculty and staff are being supplied free flu shots by the school and most have received theirs already.
  • Follow the protocols for when your child is sick or needs to be in quarantine - to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and to keep our community safe and healthy and our school open, we need your partnership and your strong adherence to the following protocols:
  • If your student is exhibiting one or more of these COVID-19 symptoms, keep them home from school.
  • Students who are sick or who have recently had close contact with a person with COVID-19 must notify the school nurse, MaryLou Cunningham, and stay home.
  • Students suspected of having COVID-19 and are awaiting results must inform the school nurse immediately.
  • Students who test positive for COVID-19 must inform the school nurse immediately.
  • Positive COVID-19 students must self-isolate for 10 days from the time symptoms appear and they are fever free, without the use of fever-reducing medications, for 24 hours. CDH guidance on self-isolation can be found here
  • Anyone identified as having close contact with the positive COVID-19 student (within 6 feet for 15 minutes) must isolate for 14 days from the last time they had contact with the positive person, whether or not they themselves have tested negative. CDH guidance for close contact persons can be found here.

Thank you again for your support and we continue to be grateful to all of you for your partnership in the learning experience of your sons and daughters. Please know you and your families continue to be in our prayers. We hope and pray you have a relaxing, safe and peaceful first weekend of the fall season!

God Bless,

Father Vance's Reflection
On Tuesday, September 29, the Catholic Church celebrated the Feast of the Archangels Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Today, the Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels. To me, it is no accident that we have been asked to pray about the angelic realm twice in one week. The Church is asking us to take their existence seriously, and to strive in our lives to have a spiritual relationship with the angels.

When I was young, I remember being encouraged to name my Guardian Angel. But this didn’t come from Church teaching. As Pope Benedict XVI pointed out, we are given the right to name those things and people that we have authority over. We name our pets, and we name our children. But we do not name the angels that surround us. They have been given their nature and their individuality by God alone, and we do not have the authority to give them names. What we have, instead, is the opportunity to relate to them, and to thank God for sending them to us for protection, guidance and to remind us of God’s Providential care.

Do you believe that angels surround you? Do you believe that there is an unseen-but-real realm around us, and that this realm is eternal and, because it is eternal, it is actually MORE important than the things and issue of this world? I know this is difficult to believe, but it is the unbroken tradition of our Judeo-Christian heritage. Unfortunately, if the angelic realm exists, then so too does the demonic realm exist. And the two realms work at crossed-purposes, with the angels encouraging our faith in Christ, and the demons working to destroy it. Between these two forces lies our free will, to listen and be affected by one or the other of these spiritual powers.

If we acknowledged the reality of angels, and if we gave a little of our energy to listening to what they might be saying to us, I am convinced that we would be able to negotiate the challenges of this year and of our lives with more grace and peace than we are sometimes able to. The chief duty of our Guardian Angel is to protect us from the snares of the Devil. So that traditional image of a little devil on one shoulder, and a little angel on the other, each whispering into our respective ears is very appropriate! Which voice will we listen to today, and what will that mean for the choices we make and the meaning we give to our experiences?

Today, the Faculty and Staff celebrated the Feast of the Holy Guardian Angels together at St. John’s Cathedral, followed by some different activities of prayer and fellowship. Please pray for all who are working so hard at BK, and know that we are all praying for the wonderful families of our community! May the angels surround us and protect us as we continue this school year! As the traditional prayer says:
Angel of God, my Guardian dear,
To whom God’s love commits me here,
Ever this day, be at my side,
To light, to guard,
To rule and guide.
Amen.

Knights of the Week
Each week Bishop Kelly faculty and staff nominate students, and students nominate faculty and staff, who have demonstrated the BK Way attributes of Faith, Safe and Caring Place, Academic Excellence, Activities, Honor, Generosity, Community, and Partnership.

Congratulations to this week's Knights of the Week!

Mia Rauer
Community
Mia, recently, casted and acted in a short film for the Wassmuth Human Rights Center called "How to Be an Upstander--A.C.T." She worked with a professional actor from New York, and it premiered on Saturday, September 26 during the virtual “Change Your World Celebration” Pre-function. Thank you Mia for your dedication to making this world a better place!

Ruby Mulcahy
Safe and Caring Place
At the football game last Friday, Ruby called over a little girl who was following the cheerleaders movements, and had her come cheer with her and a group of students. The little girl stood out in the front of the student section with the pom poms she gave her and was smiling the whole time! She made the little girl’s night! Then, the same night, she invited another student that was standing alone most of the night to come cheer with us. This student stood at the front with us and joined in on the cheering! By the end of the night, this student was LEADING the cheers! It was amazing! It was wonderful to watch Ruby include others and make them feel welcome, it was inspiring!

Ben Wolbach
Safe and Caring Place
Ben is always demonstrating caring through good sportsmanship. Ben helps an opponent who may have fallen, encourages everyone, cheers, claps and hi-five's all opponents. He is also respectful to everyone including teammates, the opposition and his teachers. He is a great positive addition to my class.

BK Staff of the Week

Kenny Matthews, Cecilia Flores, Melissa Janquart, Maria Castro, and Daniel Carl
Safe and Caring Place
The Custodial Staff are making sure that we are safe by cleaning the school daily, and making sure that we are protected by COVID-19. They are very caring about doing this, because they know how much we want to be at school, and they want us to have a good experience here. I see all of them cleaning the halls and bathrooms all the time and classrooms, to protect us. The entire BK community is very appreciative of them! Thank you!

Volunteer Opportunities for Students
ONE STONE
Love of Learning Project
Love of Learning (LOL) is a program in part with One Stone's Project Good that will work to keep the joy of learning alive, especially while many students navigate unique challenges that can come with virtual learning. High schoolers who join this project will have the opportunity to meet one-on-one with a younger buddy in person, where they will act as their mentor and helper with anything the buddy might need help within school. This mentorship will help create and strengthen relationships, build confidence in school, and help students transition to a new kind of learning environment.

Meetings: Love of Learning will meet in person with their buddies once a week for two hours, as well as have planning meetings once a week for an hour. Students who choose to be involved in this project can choose which session they would like depending on the day of the week: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. Feel free to email [email protected] with any questions.

One Stone has other volunteer opportunities as well. To sign up for LOL or any other projects, go to: https://onestone.org/project-good-1

Meridian Library District
The Meridian Library District has numerous volunteer opportunities available. Some in-person and some virtual. Go to: https://www.mld.org/connect/help-home to see what’s available and to sign up.

Math Tutor Needed
A student at St. Mark’s needs a volunteer math tutor. If you are in the NHS this could be a good way to get your tutoring hours! For more information, contact Mrs. Colleran at [email protected] or stop by room 710.

Earlybird Pricing for Yearbooks Ends Soon!
Order your yearbook before October 11th for the lowest price of the year. Visit Jostens to order.

Earlybird Pricing for Senior Ads in the Yearbook Also Ends Soon!
The early bird pricing deadline for a senior ad in the yearbook is quickly approaching. October 15th is the deadline for a discounted price, and the regular deadline is November 12th. Don't miss this opportunity to send off your senior with a few special words and photos. The ads are built primarily online, and it's a simple process. For more information, see THIS FLYER and/or visit The Yearbook Company website.
Update on Senior Tux and Drape Photos
We've had to make some changes to the on-campus option for senior tux and drape photos. Because of a few issues with the photographer and sharing the tuxes and drapes, we've had to change this to an off-campus activity. However, we have a few photographers who have been contacted and are willing to work with BK families to offer this photo on the same scheduled day (October 14th) at their studio and for a very discounted price. Please see THIS BLOG POST for specific information and who you should contact.

The most important thing is to know that you or your Senior will need to contact the photographer to schedule the time slot--this is not a walk-in appointment.

Please contact them as soon as possible so you can get scheduled. Photos are due by November 30th, whether you are using your own photographer or one of the ones listed on the flyer.
We Need Your Pictures!
The yearbook staff is working on pages for the yearbook, and we need your photos!

Please send in any photos that you have of your student participating or completing his/her Senior Service Project, Senior Float, Quarantine Pets, Purchases and/or Activities, and any pictures from summer trips and/or activities. Be sure to label them or put in the email body some sort of explanation. Photos can be shared with us on our Instagram page at @bkyrbook or via email to [email protected]
