BKR International Worldwide Bulletin
July/August 2021
Letter from the Worldwide Chair

In my last Bulletin letter to you, I said that I thought the COVID-19 epidemic had more twists and turns to play out. I think events around the globe have borne this out. It is great to see those areas of the world where vaccination programs are going well. However, as a global association, the imbalance in vaccination levels around the world raises challenges in the way we all return to "normality." Whilst we are planning our first "face-to-face" meeting in Washington, DC, at the end of the year, we are exploring options to allow members who cannot attend in person to join us by streaming and recording the meeting. We certainly plan that BKR International will make full use of remote technology as part of our normal offering as we move forward.

I was delighted to see DiSanto, Priest & Co. (Warwick) announce that Partner Bill Pirolli, CPA/CFF/PFS, CGMA, has been elected as chair of the board of directors of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and vice chair of the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. Read more about Bill's appointment below. I am sure the whole membership of BKR International join me to congratulate him and wish him all the best in this prestigious role.

It was good to see members at the Americas Town Hall Meeting on May 20, especially our US members after their extended tax season. We have had excellent remote meetings from the EMEA Region on June 7 and the Americas Region on June 28-29. Again, it was great to interact with members, even if only remotely, on these occasions. Both of these meetings highlighted our theme of "Driven by Innovation... Sustainability for All" and gave members useful pointers to take forward with their own firms to achieve this. I look forward to the Asia-Pacific remote meeting being held on July 23-24. They have some renowned experts to present to members.

Please do contact me or our CEO Tim Morris (London) if you have anything you would like to discuss. We always welcome your thoughts and are keen to assist in any way we can.

Best regards,

Graeme Boake

Be Sure to Update Your Firm's Member Information Page

As many of you know, BKR International's world standing as an association is based in part on our ranking in numerous international surveys published throughout the year, most notably the International Accounting Bulletin's Annual World Survey, which is based primarily on the fees reported to us by our members.

We rely on the accuracy of our firms' input to determine the statistics that we are able to submit to such publications each year.

We would like to ask all member firms to log into BKR's Member Services and visit their Member Information to ensure that all fee and staff data is current and accurate.

Help us maintain our status as one of the leading accounting associations in the world!
BKR's 2021 EMEA Regional Virtual Conference

As is the way of the current – be we hope not lasting – norm, BKR’s EMEA Region held its AGM virtually on Monday, June 7. Of more interest (and benefit) to the members was the Innovation Day, which, after the formality of the AGM, offered a challenging and inspiring look at Innovation. Feedback from our members was overwhelmingly positive. “I think it was the best EMEA lecture day ever,” was the feedback from one member. We have included more comments below.

The day offered an equal mix of thought, activity, and reflection, and was organized and led quite superbly by Dr. Helena Boschi. Helena regularly talks to lawyers and accountants, using her experience as a psychologist who has focused on applied neuroscience in the workplace to bring practical context to the stresses placed on us in the workplace. Her explanations of why and how our brains perform as they do offered insight and enlightenment in equal measure. “This presentation is so clever, it made me feel clever!”

Annabel Howard, an art historian and writer who uses art to develop observational skills, gave us a chance to reflect on what is before us and what we really see. “For me, a completely different way to look at this kind of topic.” A masterclass in observation using paintings, the delegates were challenged to describe what they saw; what could be simpler?! But the obvious is often missed and the clues rarely seen. Learning to slow down, observe, and assume nothing immediately gave the delegates greater insight into what they were seeing with obvious read across to daily lives.
