Letter from the Worldwide Chair

For those of you who have taken a break over August, I hope that you have come back refreshed.

We are looking ahead to our first in-person meeting at BKR's 2021 Annual Worldwide Meeting in Washington, DC, at the Fairmont Hotel from October 29 - November 2. This will be our first real opportunity to get together in person. It will be a great chance to start rekindling our relationships, both business and personal. Registration has just been sent out to all members, and I look forward to catching up with everyone. Given the current crisis, we will be following the local Washington, DC, COVID safety protocols and guidance to ensure the safety of all delegates. For those unable to attend the meeting, we will be recording it for future viewing. Many thanks to Steven Braunstein from our Washington, DC, member firm, Snyder Cohn, PC, who are our host for the meeting. They have been very helpful in putting our program together for our theme, "Driven by Innovation…Sustainability for All."

Continuing our return to "normality," it is good to look at upcoming meetings that will be held in person. I want to let you know that these include the EMEA Tax Meeting and a re-introduced EMEA Audit Meeting, both in Amsterdam on November 29, and the EMEA Future Leaders Meeting in Amsterdam on November 29-30. The Americas Region will also be holding the US Tax Practice Group Workshop in Atlanta on November 11-12 and the Managing Partner Roundtables in Orlando on December 5-6. The next Asia-Pacific Future Leaders' Training Course is being planned for early December. Please note the dates. These meetings will lead into a full program of meetings for members in 2022.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of David Goldner of Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, P.A. (Baltimore) to the Worldwide Board. David leaves the board after his six-years' tenure. We all owe him a big vote of thanks for what he has done for BKR International. His place on the board has been taken by Raymi Mejia of MLA - Mejia Lora & Asociados (Santo Domingo), who joins after his tenure as the chair of the Americas Region. Jeremy Vokt of Bland & Associates, P.C. (Omaha) has taken over as the new chair of the Americas Region. I look forward to working with our new Worldwide Board members.

I feel that this is the most optimistic piece I have written for a Bulletin. I am really looking forward to re-connecting with members in person. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate in contacting me or any of the Worldwide or Regional Board members, or staff.

Worldwide and Regional Heads Give Updates on BKR Programs to Asia-Pac Member Firms During the 2021 AGM

BKR Asia-Pac concluded its 2021 AGM on July 23-24 with about 40 participants across the region and worldwide.

BKR CEO Tim Morris, Worldwide Chair Graeme Boake (Johannesburg), EMEA Regional Chair Andre Buijsman (Amersfoort), Asia-Pacific Regional Chair Subir Dutta (Kolkata), and the Asia-Pacific Regional Board gave members updates and developments on their respective regions.

Productive and insightful presentations were made by Donny Shimamoto on "How Emerging Technologies Affect the Accounting Profession," Eric Picart on "Keys to Successful Innovation," and Emmanuel Adda on "Stress Adaptation."

An open discussion was also held where members shared their experiences, knowledge, and plans amidst the pandemic.

Bryna Campbell, CPA, CGMA; Chaim Fine, CPA, CFP®; and Jennifer Rock, CPA, CITP have been elected partners at Gross, Mendelsohn & Associates, P.A., a 125-person CPA, wealth advisory, and technology consulting firm with offices in Maryland and Virginia.

“It’s a huge honor to call Bryna, Chaim, and Jennifer my partners,” said Len Rus, the firm’s managing partner.

Bryna has over 30 years of accounting experience and provides audit, accounting, tax, and consulting services to businesses and nonprofits. She joined the firm in 2020.

Chaim joined the firm in 2007. With 18 years of accounting experience, Chaim provides a full range of tax and accounting services to small businesses, investment partnerships, high net worth families, and real estate companies.

Jennifer has over 20 years of accounting experience. She joined the firm in 2008 and performs audit and accounting work for all kinds of nonprofits, health and welfare organizations, and associations.
Kevin P. Martin & Associates, P.C. (Boston) Announces New Partner

Kevin P. Martin & Associates, P.C. (KPM) is pleased to announce the promotion of James Matzdorff, CPA, MSA as a new partner at the firm. James is based in the firm’s Braintree, Massachusetts, office.

“We are so incredibly pleased that James will be joining the KPM partner group. Through the years, James has surpassed all expectations, and we are excited for him to bring that same passion to the leadership of KPM,” said Kevin P. James has almost 15 years of experience in public accounting. His practice predominantly encompasses numerous affordable housing projects, nonprofit organizations, and faith-based institutions. James is well versed in the technical aspects of nonprofits subject to Yellow Book and OMB Uniform Guidance. James also specializes in, but is not limited to, internal control, staff analysis, and department realignment consulting, as well as cost allocation and compliance driven audits. James is chair of the firm’s Nonprofit Committee, chair of BKR International’s Future Leaders Committee, and a leading member of the firm’s Recruiting Committee. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), Massachusetts Society of CPAs (MSCPA), and the Rhode Island Society of CPAs (RISCPA). He is a graduate of both Liberty University and Gordon College.
