Chickens on the lake trail?

Just another day in Beaver Lake

But wait... What's this?

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER WE HAVE A SECOND WINNER

the photo below was submitted by Adam Orlow

Because nameless chickens are just birds, ours are Beaver Lake celebrities!

So what's up with chickens on our property, you ask...

Chickens like these, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Rhode Island Reds, and others are not wild birds and are not naturally found in the wild in places like Monticello, NY.

However:

Here’s what could explain their presence:

  1. Escaped or released flock: It’s likely these chickens (and the duck) belong or belonged to someone nearby and either escaped their coop or were let loose.
  2. Free-ranging neighbors: Some residents in rural or semi-rural parts of Monticello raise chickens and let them roam. These birds may have wandered onto our property.

Sure, this might be more than you ever wanted to know…but I’m the editor, and you’re stuck with me!
