Abigail Karsh, a day camp counselor, from Israel, was the first to correctly answer last week's question of what animal pooped the poo: B. Black Bear
What Do Black Bears Eat?
Spring: fresh greens and forbs (e.g., skunk cabbage), grasses, plus lots of ants and other insects.
Summer: “soft mast” like blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and cherries; still plenty of insects.
Late summer - fall: “hard mast” such as acorns and beechnuts, plus wild apples and farm crops like corn as they fatten up for winter.
Overall diet: mostly plant-based - about 90% plants, with the rest insects and occasional animal matter (carrion, sometimes fawns or small mammals).
Around people: they’ll also take easy meals - bird seed, trash, pet food, honey/beehives - so securing attractants matters.
