Happy New Year BLC Members,
I hope you all had an enjoyable holiday season with family and friends. Now we get to enjoy the true MN winter with lots of snow, freezing temps, and frozen lakes. It can be a tough time of year for those of us who struggle a bit in the winter but your BLC Board has been working hard to put together a number of events which are sure to help you through this winter season.
First up, this month's January Meeting will feature Hays Baldwin who will be talking about everything ice fishing. Hays is a local guide and spends a ton of time on the water regardless of the season. He will be going over everything from panfish to eelpout and discussing how he approaches different species as the ice year progresses. We will also be extending our holiday giving season into this month's meeting so bring a toy, canned goods or make a cash donation to be entered into some special raffles.
The BLC Sportsman's Banquet is set for March 25, 2023 at the Pavilion at Craguns. This event is our main fundraiser for the year, a ton of fun and features thousands of dollars in prizes. We are just waiting for permit information back and will have tickets for sale, immediately after. In the meantime, mark your calendars and save the date. You can also help out by approaching any business that you may have connections with and seeing if they might be willing to provide possible donations.
Lastly, I want to offer a very special thank you to all of the members who agreed to serve on our 2023 BLC Board. We are very fortunate to have active members who are willing to give their time to our organization so that we all can benefit. If you have not assisted with any of our volunteer opportunities throughout the year, I strongly encourage you to consider taking advantage of the many we have this coming year. It's a great way to give back and is honestly some of the most enjoyable time you will spend throughout the year. With that, we are seeking additional members to participate in the Minnesota Muskie and Pike Alliance (MMPA) this coming year. This is a sister organization to Muskies Inc. and assists with many efforts throughout the year, including education, stocking, and legislative related items. If you are interested in finding out more, please talk with any of our board members.
Hope to see all at this month's meeting.
Jim Kath

December Meeting is Giving Season - And so is January!
|
|
Due to the weather and the need to postpone and relocate our December meeting, that may have impacted your ability to join us last month. We also had some "technical difficulties" that resulted in us not having any prize drawings for your generous donations. So we are going to collect donations for the community for January as well. And don't worry, we know who was at the December meeting and donated. So your name will be going in this month's drawings for a chance to win.
Bring in $10 worth of non-perishable food items, a cash donation for the BLA Food Shelf or gifts for Toys-for-Kids to receive a ticket for a drawing! For every $10 worth of items donated, the more tickets you will earn for our special drawing.
Food donation suggestions:
- Canned veggies
- Rice
- Dried beans
- Coffee/tea
- Spices (salt, pepper, garlic powder, etc.)
- Baking items (flour, sugar, powdered sugar, etc.)
- Cooking oil
- Boxed milk
- Quick and easy meals (chow mein, canned soup, hamburger helper, manwich, etc.)
- Dish soap
NEW to the series of giving - MN Fish is giving away fishing rods to youth. Join their cause and donate $10 towards the purchasing of fishing rods for children across the state of Minnesota. The BLC will match donations to the MN Fish program from funds raised the night of the December meeting. **BLC will match donations up to $500**
- Two separate prize drawings. One for donations for the Food Shelf/Toys-for-Kids and one for the MN Fish donations. Multiple prizes in each drawing.

2023 Gil Hamm
Chapter Challunge
As winners of the 2022 Gil Hamm, the BLC is responsible for selecting the destination and hosting the event for 2023 and we will be heading to Lake Vermilion out of Vermilion Dam Lodge. About a decade ago, the BLC helped the Star of the North Chapter host the Gil Hamm at this same location. And people are still talking about that as the best Gil Hamm event they have ever attended. So the bar has been set high and we are ready for that challenge!
August 22 to 25, 2023
Lake Vermilion
Vermilion Dam Lodge
Vermilion Dam Lodge is holding cabins for Gil Hamm participants through the end of January before they open them up to the general public. More details to come!
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are thinking about fishing the Hamm, call or text Jody at 218-821-3727 to let her know. Even if you don't know if you can make it work for your schedule, just knowing that you are considering it will be very helpful. We know it's only January. But the sooner we know these things, the more helpful it will be.

Our 2022 newly created, Business Partnership Program announces the first stage of this ongoing effort to raise funds for our Youth Programs, Muskie Fisheries, and Muskie Research.
The first Partnership we are seeking is that of a PRESENTER PARTNER of our rapidly expanding YOUTH Program. With the increased cost of entry to Muskie Fishing, coupled with the fact that Muskie Fishing has grown 300% over the last decade, dictates that we do more to get Families involved in the sport. Who would have ever predicted that we would know how HS Muskie Fishing Teams and that HS Fishing has become a major activity in our Schools?
As PRESENTING Youth Sponsor, your company will enjoy the benefits: Presenting Partner with Naming Rights, Logo advertising in all our Print, In Person Muskie Seminar for Beginners to an audience you select, and a one Muskies Inc. Membership to be part of our National MI Team. We will also customize other assets as requested to meet your Marketing needs.
Please contact: Ron Sanders, our Partnership Chair, by phone (612-386-1100) or via email at ronssm@aol.com for further information and details.
