June 2025 BLC Newsletter

Logo

Meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of the month, 7pm @ the Nisswa American Legion

New Location

Hello Everyone,

Musky Season is a few short days away. Let's all stay safe and good luck fishing.

The Minnesota DNR has come out with their new long term plan for muskies in Minnesota. They are looking for your feedback so please take the time to fill out the survey, there is a link located farther down in the newsletter. We are holding our High School musky tournament on June 20th. If you know of any High School kids interested in musky fishing get them signed up. It is free to fish and they will receive some musky gear and a lunch. Aaron has spent time creating an easier way for you to log your fish into the BLC chapter release contest. The new release form is in the newsletter along with on the website. We had a number of members with questions regarding entering fish and we hope this will help simplify the process. Please note that this is only if you do not want your fish entered into the Lunge Log, but still want to participate in the chapter release contest.

There are several musky studies going on this summer, we have a few of them listed in the newsletter. A few of the studies going on need angler participation, if you're fishing any of the waters where one of these studies are taking place, please participate. The information gathered will help the future of Minnesota Muskies.

Lure Building

We will be building a bucktail or spinnerbait for the fraction of the cost of a new one. If you have a bucktail that's a little beat up and needs to be redone, bring them and we'll show you how to do it. J3 Tackle will have components and tools on hand to help you build. We also expect to have some Phantom blanks available for painting.

FREE Lifetime Fishing License

We will also be drawing for a LIFETIME FISHING LICENSE to a BLC Youth Member at the June meeting. If you have a youth member that became a new member or renewed between January 1st and May 31st, those are the only eligibility requirements. Need not be present to win. But we do hope you'll be there!

Meetings are open to the public and FREE to attend! Chance to win various prizes from lures or maybe a rod in our meeting raffles. Come to hear and share fish stories and more. One random door prize drawing for those in attendance. Bring your friends!

New Long Range Muskie Management Plan -

Feedback Needed!

If you missed the previous email regarding the new long range management plan, you can find that email summary here.

Long Range Plan Email

It's very important that they hear from us if you haven't done so already. Opposition is speaking up, they need to hear from those that support the Minnesota Muskie Program!

Review the Long Range Plan here

One thing we neglected to mention in the previous email on this subject is that they also have a survey for folks to take. While personal emails where you can provide more detailed feedback are excellent, we'd also encourage you to take the survey.

Take the survey here

The deadline for providing feedback is June 12th. Send comments to: mnmuskieplan2025@state.mn.us

Leech Lake Muskies

High School Muskie Tournament

Registration info and rules can be found on the website.

Musky Data Collection Challenge

If you fish the lakes of Douglas County, this is a great opportunity to help collect valuable data for the DNR and a chance to win a few prizes along the way! All information you need to know is on the below flyer.

Pit Tag Readers

You will need a Pit Tag Reader to participate. We shared some information about these low cost devices in one of our newsletters last year. They can be used anywhere where muskies are stocked with pit tags (most of the state) to collect data that you can share with your local DNR office. As noted in the below flyer, there is a link in the Fish Donkey app to find one. You can also check on Amazon. Search "ISO 11784/11785 reader" to find one that will work. They are not all waterproof, so we recommend keeping them in a zip loc bag to keep them dry.

2025 Release Contest & Replica Eligibility

The 2025 season is upon us! Here is our annual reminder to everyone of our annual release contest as well as our replica eligibility.

  • Any BLC member that enters a fish into our release standings in a given month goes into a random drawing for a Musky Tackle Online gift card at the following month's meeting. MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN.
  • You can enter your fish online through the Lunge Log or submit in person at any meeting to our Release Chairman, Nathan Stifter. Submitting your fish electronically will save our release chairman a considerable amount of time.
  • If you would like to have your fish entered in the chapter contest but not be submitted to the national Lunge Log, you can download and print out a release form to be submitted to Nathan. Be sure that you check the appropriate box on the upper left hand corner.
  • NEW - We have created our own electronic BLC release form for chapter release contest entry only (not to be included in the national Lunge Log). You can also submit your fish and pictures for replica eligibility this way.

Bump Boards for Sale

As a board (no pun intended) we made the decision to invest in some new bump boards for the Jeff Young Memorial Muskie Shootout that we hold every fall on Leech Lake. We did this to add both the chapter and shootout logos to the boards. But we also wanted to support an operational bump board company in Muskie Bumper. The original bump boards for the Shootout were from T's Tackle and they have not been in business for a number of years now.

So that means we have a bunch of bump boards that we need to find new homes for! Are you in need of one for yourself or know someone that is? These are all in excellent condition, with the majority still looking essentially brand new. And we are selling these for just $70 each. A similar bump board purchased brand new will cost over $120. So this is a great deal and they will be first come, first served.

We will have a few available at each of our monthly meetings until they are gone. If you would like to reserve one to make sure we have one for you at our next meeting, just respond to this email to let us know.
