June 2022 BLC Newsletter
Meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of the month, 7pm @ American Legion Nisswa
Dear BLC Members,
Hold on to your hats, it’s actually here. The 2022 Muskie Opener is upon us, providing the start to another season of much needed time with friends, intense adrenaline rushes, inconsolable heartbreaks, and the phrase, “It’s barely hooked,” being said countless times. I hope you are set to go and get the chance to go chase these frustrating fish we all so love, or maybe love to hate, or hate to love, or whatever….
Your BLC board has been busy with a number of youth activities this past month and will continue to provide a few more in the coming months as well. Thanks to all our members who helped out with the Brainerd Parks and Rec. Youth Fishing Clinic in May. This month on June 24th, we will be hosting our 13th Annual High School Muskie Tournament on Lake Alexander. Students in grades 8-12 will be competing for a chance to go on to the State Muskie Tournament on Lake Vermillion in August. If you are interested in helping out, please let me know. We are also working hard to put together a new and improved Youth Night event. Details will be forthcoming when a venue and date are finalized.
The start of the muskie season is also a great reminder to get signed up for our BLC Jeff Young Memorial Shootout that will be held October 1st and 2nd, 2022. We have a number of teams signed up already and are hoping to reach our 50 boat max. You can sign up on our website or follow the links in our newsletter to get locked in today.
This month’s meeting, held June 14th, 2022 we will be doing a lake breakdown of our yearly MHOTY schedule.  Members will be sharing techniques and tactics to help break down these lakes throughout the year. This is a great way to network with other anglers and to perhaps set up a date to fish with a new partner at one of our events this year. Hope to see you there. And in the words of a great mentor and friend, “Get your net wet.”

Lake Breakdown Discussion

A this month's meeting we will be discussing our outing schedule with specific discussion about each lake. This will be an open format and we encourage involvement from all for a fun discussion. The more involvement, the more enjoyable the talk and the more we all learn.

Meetings are open to the public and FREE to attend! Chance to win various prizes from lures or maybe a rod in our meeting raffles. Come to hear and share fish stories and more. One random door prize drawing for those in attendance. Bring your friends!
BLC Annual Youth Event - Sunday July 31st - Lum Park
The BLC has always hosted an annual Youth Night. In recent years, this has been incorporated as part of our normal monthly meetings, usually in the month of June. This year we are changing things up and we will be holding this on Sunday, July 31st at Lum Park. More details and an exact time will be announced at a later date. Stay tuned!
Jeff Young Memorial -
2022 Muskie Shootout
The BLC Muskie Shootout on Leech Lake is excited to be heading back to Agency Bay Lodge in 2022! The dates have been locked in for October 1st and 2nd and registration for this year's event is up and running.

The Shootout has also received a new name as the Jeff Young Memorial Muskie Shootout. As most of you know, Jeff passed away this past October. He was a driving force behind most of the chapter's events since the chapter reorganized nearly 20 years ago. He pushed hard for the chapter to host our own tournament. And this will be the 11th annual event that we have held on beautiful Leech Lake. Thank you, Jeff, for all that you did.

Find all the details and sign up on the Shootout page of the website.

New Sponsor Spotlight - Waste Partners
The BLC would like to welcome Waste Partners to our great list of sponsors. The businesses that we partner with don't always have to have a direct connection to muskies or the fishing industry. And Waste Partners is a great example of that.

It's great when the BLC can find connections with area businesses that believe in and support what we do as an organization. And Waste Partners was excited to be able to support our Youth Corner at this year's Sportsman's Banquet. They helped us out financially to make sure our youth were well taken care of at this year's event and we look forward to this continued relationship.

If you're in the lakes area and have the option to utilize Waste Partners for your trash services, we encourage you to give them a chance to earn your business and support a great family owned business that supports the BLC and getting our youth more involved in fishing and the outdoors.
BLC Youth Sponsorship
Our 2021-2022 newly created, Business Partnership Program announces the first stage of this ongoing effort to raise funds for our Youth Programs, Muskie Fisheries, and Muskie Research.
The first Partnership we are seeking is that of a PRESENTER PARTNER of our rapidly expanding YOUTH Program. With the increased cost of entry to Muskie Fishing, coupled with the fact that Muskie Fishing has grown 300% over the last decade, dictates that we do more to get Families involved in the sport. Who would have ever predicted that we would know how HS Muskie Fishing Teams and that HS Fishing has become a major activity in our Schools?
As PRESENTING Youth Sponsor, your company will enjoy the benefits: Presenting Partner with Naming Rights, Logo advertising in all our Print, In Person Muskie Seminar for Beginners to an audience you select, and a one Muskies Inc. Membership to be part of our National MI Team. We will also customize other assets as requested to meet your Marketing needs.
Please contact: Ron Sanders, our Partnership Chair, by phone (612-386-1100) or via email at for further information and details.

2022 Release Standings

If you would like to participate in our 2022 release contest or be eligible for a free replica, please make sure to check out the above link and scroll down for requirements. We don't have any fish registered for this year quite yet. But we're looking forward to seeing what happens in 2022!
2022 Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge

Gil Hamm, along with many others, was instrumental in the creation of the Muskies Inc organization, seeing the importance of musky conservation for future generations. Going back more than 40 years ago, Gil Hamm and the others from Chapter #1, the Twin Cities Chapter, decided that bringing everyone together for a fishing event couldn’t have been a better idea (I think we can all agree)!

The Fargo-Moorhead Chapter of Muskies Inc will be hosting the Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge this year. Join them for this annual event, coming together as a greater Muskies Inc nationwide event. Get to know your fellow musky fishing peers from around the country and have a great time fishing on world class waters.

Where: Horseshoe Bay Lodge - Leech Lake
When: August 17th - 19th, 2022
•6 people per team.
•Unlimited numbers of teams per chapter can fish the tournament.
•No cost per individual to enter - the BLC picks up the cost per team entry.
•Participants must find and pay for their own lodging.
•Contact Jay Young at (218)-821-9964 to sign up.

For more information and updates, check out the Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge website.
