May 2022 BLC Newsletter
Meetings are the 2nd Tuesday of the month, 7pm @ American Legion Nisswa
Greetings BLC Members,

I think it is actually happening! Spring appears to be making a late appearance but I am relatively certain in saying that we are headed for warmer days. This is a welcome sight for those of us who have been impatiently waiting for the ice to leave our area lakes to officially kick off the 2022 open water season. Most local lakes appear to be likely to go out this week sometime with some larger ones hopefully to follow early next week. This is a welcome sight with the MN Walleye Opener coming up on May 14th. I hope you are able to get out on the water, enjoy some warming weather, and wet a line.

It’s a busy time of year in the fishing world and we have lots going on with the BLC. If you have never volunteered for any of the multiple youth events we are involved in, I’d highly recommend that you consider helping out this year. These opportunities really are the heart of what we do to ensure future generations are able to enjoy the resources we leave them with. We will be assisting with the Brainerd Parks and Rec. Kids Fishing Day on May 21st, 2022, holding our High School Regional Muskie Tournament on June 24th, 2022, and are in the process of putting together a new format for our Annual BLC Youth Event. Please contact me if you are willing to help out with any of these events or are interested in additional details.

We are offering a great BLC monthly meeting on May 10, 2022 to help you get ready for the upcoming 2022 Muskie Season. First, we will offer our Annual Membership Drive to help make sure you are up to date with your MI membership before the season starts.  We will be offering discounted memberships with a chance for a completely free yearly membership for 2022. Also with our Membership Drive, we are going to be doing our Annual Lure Making Night, hosted by J3 Tackle. Members will get a chance to make a custom bucktail and/or repair any existing ones they bring in that need some work. Grab a friend, encourage them to come and maybe consider becoming a member that same night. Look forward to seeing you next week.

May 10th Meeting, 7pm

Lure Making and Membership Drive

This month's meeting we will be building a bucktail for the fraction of the cost of a new one. If you have a bucktail that's a little beat up and needs to be redone, bring them and we'll show you how to do it. J3 Tackle will have components and tools on hand to help you build.

We will also be having our annual membership drive. Draw a card for a discount on your membership or even the chance at a free membership. Good no matter when your renewal date is. Bring a friend and have them sign up as a new member for the same deal!

Meetings are open to the public and FREE to attend! Chance to win various prizes from lures or maybe a rod in our meeting raffles. Come to hear and share fish stories and more. One random door prize drawing for those in attendance. Bring your friends!
Get your summer BLC gear!
Get your summer BLC gear here!

It’s (almost) summer, folks, so it’s time to think about turning over your closet! Pull out all of your winter gear, put your spring and summer clothes back in your closet, and pick up some new BLC wear for the upcoming fishing season.

Shirts, hoodies, zip-up sweatshirts, hats and youth apparel options.

We don’t always think about protecting our skin when we’re outdoors during the summer. Putting on sunscreen can be a hassle. Having to reapply throughout the day is even more of a hassle, and, not to mention cuts into our fishing time. We have the solution! Sport some BLC swag that’s got your skin in mind. UV protecting options are available in the store, with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of 50+. Keep fishing longer with some great swag!

The online store will be open and available from May 5th through May 19th. Order online and choose to have your items shipped to you (shipping not included), or pick them up at the June monthly meeting!

Jeff Young Memorial -
2022 Muskie Shootout
The BLC Muskie Shootout on Leech Lake is excited to be heading back to Agency Bay Lodge in 2022! The dates have been locked in for October 1st and 2nd and registration for this year's event is up and running.

The Shootout has also received a new name as the Jeff Young Memorial Muskie Shootout. As most of you know, Jeff passed away this past October. He was a driving force behind most of the chapter's events since the chapter reorganized nearly 20 years ago. He pushed hard for the chapter to host our own tournament. And this will be the 11th annual event that we have held on beautiful Leech Lake. Thank you, Jeff, for all that you did.

Find all the details and sign up on the Shootout page of the website.

New Sponsor Spotlight - Esox Ink Creative
The BLC would like to welcome Esox Ink Creative as another great new sponsor. Founded by Wayne Zitzow in 1995, the direction of the business has evolved over the years. And you will recognize many of the companies that have taken advantage of what they have to offer. What began as a t-shirt company has transitioned into a business that specializes in graphic design. Whether you need logo work, advertising design, brochures, packaging, etc. get in touch with Wayne to see what he can do for you. Click here for a sample of some of his work. You've also seen some of his work with the BLC as of late and we owe him a huge thank you for that. The flyers that you have seen for the Sportsman's Banquet and the 2022 Muskie Shootout are a couple of those items. Reach out to Esox Ink Creative today for your graphic design needs.
BLC Youth Sponsorship
Our 2021-2022 newly created, Business Partnership Program announces the first stage of this ongoing effort to raise funds for our Youth Programs, Muskie Fisheries, and Muskie Research.
The first Partnership we are seeking is that of a PRESENTER PARTNER of our rapidly expanding YOUTH Program. With the increased cost of entry to Muskie Fishing, coupled with the fact that Muskie Fishing has grown 300% over the last decade, dictates that we do more to get Families involved in the sport. Who would have ever predicted that we would know how HS Muskie Fishing Teams and that HS Fishing has become a major activity in our Schools?
As PRESENTING Youth Sponsor, your company will enjoy the benefits: Presenting Partner with Naming Rights, Logo advertising in all our Print, In Person Muskie Seminar for Beginners to an audience you select, and a one Muskies Inc. Membership to be part of our National MI Team. We will also customize other assets as requested to meet your Marketing needs.
Please contact: Ron Sanders, our Partnership Chair, by phone (612-386-1100) or via email at [email protected] for further information and details.

2022 Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge

Gil Hamm, along with many others, was instrumental in the creation of the Muskies Inc organization, seeing the importance of musky conservation for future generations. Going back more than 40 years ago, Gil Hamm and the others from Chapter #1, the Twin Cities Chapter, decided that bringing everyone together for a fishing event couldn’t have been a better idea (I think we can all agree)!

The Fargo-Moorhead Chapter of Muskies Inc will be hosting the Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge this year. Join them for this annual event, coming together as a greater Muskies Inc nationwide event. Get to know your fellow musky fishing peers from around the country and have a great time fishing on world class waters.

Where: Horseshoe Bay Lodge - Leech Lake
When: August 17th - 19th, 2022
Details:
•6 people per team.
•Unlimited numbers of teams per chapter can fish the tournament.
•No cost per individual to enter - the BLC picks up the cost per team entry.
•Participants must find and pay for their own lodging.
•Contact Jay Young at (218)-821-9964 to sign up.

For more information and updates, check out the Gil Hamm Chapter Challunge website.
